HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Loews Coronado Bay Resort – I mean, it’s tucked away on this sort of isolated stretch of Coronado Bay Road, and from the outside it looks like just another big hotel. But once you walk through those doors, you get it. The lobby opens up to these sweeping views of the bay, and there’s this immediate sense that you’ve stepped away from the San Diego hustle without actually leaving the city.
What really sets this place apart is the waterfront location – and I don’t mean just “near water” like so many hotels claim. You’re literally on a private peninsula jutting into San Diego Bay, with boats cruising by and the downtown skyline twinkling across the water. The resort sits on about 15 acres, so it never feels cramped even when it’s busy (which it definitely gets during summer weekends and conventions). The rooms facing the bay are worth the upgrade, honestly – you’ll wake up to sailboats and maybe catch a glimpse of dolphins if you’re lucky. The marina side can get a bit noisy with boat traffic, but it’s more interesting than annoying.
Here’s what actually matters for your stay: parking is free (rare for San Diego), the staff genuinely knows the area, and they’ve got this great little speedboat water taxi that’ll zip you over to the Hotel del Coronado or downtown. The pools are well-maintained – there’s a family-friendly main pool and a quieter adults-only area that’s perfect for afternoon reading. The spa is solid, though pricey like most resort spas. Food-wise, Mistral restaurant has surprisingly good seafood and the outdoor seating is lovely at sunset, but honestly, you’re a quick drive to some of Coronado’s better local spots if you want to venture out. The tennis courts are rarely crowded, and there’s decent jogging paths around the property – though the real gem is being able to walk along the bay shoreline.
One thing to know: this isn’t a beach resort in the traditional sense. You’re on the bay, not the ocean, so if you want proper waves and sand, you’ll need to drive about ten minutes to Coronado Beach (which is absolutely worth doing). The resort runs a shuttle during peak times, but having a car gives you way more flexibility to explore Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, or even hop over the bridge to check out Little Italy. Check-in can be slow during convention season, and the resort fee is annoying but pretty standard these days. Overall though, it’s one of those places that manages to feel both relaxing and connected to everything San Diego has to offer – which is honestly harder to find than you’d think.

The location and the privacy of our room. We really enjoyed our evening meals at the Cays Lounge. I believe the bartender‘a name was Scott. He stood out as being friendly and helpful. We also had wonderful housekeeping service. I wish I knew her name but I can’t remember it.
