Lough Erne Resort Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Lough Erne Resort on the Belleek Road, I wasn’t quite prepared for how imposing this place actually is. You’re driving through pretty standard Fermanagh countryside, past farms and the odd cottage, and then suddenly there’s this massive castle-like structure rising up from the lakeshore. It’s one of those moments where you sort of do a double-take and wonder if you took a wrong turn somewhere.
The thing about Lough Erne Resort is that it manages to feel both grand and genuinely welcoming at the same time, which honestly isn’t easy to pull off. The lobby has these soaring ceilings and dark wood everywhere, but the staff actually seem pleased to see you rather than looking like they’re doing you a favor. Check-in was smooth – they’ve got the process down to a science without making it feel robotic. What really struck me was how they’ve positioned everything to take advantage of those lough views. I mean, you’re looking out over some of the most beautiful water in Northern Ireland, and they’ve made sure pretty much every public space has windows facing the right direction.
The rooms are spacious (and I don’t just mean by UK standards), with those little touches that show someone’s actually thinking about what travelers need – proper lighting for reading, enough outlets near the bed, decent water pressure in the shower. You know what impressed me most though? The soundproofing. Despite being right on a fairly busy road connecting to Belleek, and with the resort hosting conferences and events regularly, my room was genuinely quiet. The beds are comfortable enough that I actually slept past my usual wake-up time, which rarely happens when I’m traveling.
What sets this place apart from other upscale hotels in the area – and there aren’t many at this level in Fermanagh, to be fair – is how they’ve integrated with the landscape rather than just plonking themselves down on it. The grounds flow naturally down to the water, and you can walk right to the shoreline. There’s something quite peaceful about having your morning coffee while watching the mist lift off Lough Erne. The golf course (designed by Nick Faldo, they’ll tell you) is genuinely spectacular, even if you’re just walking across it to get to the lough.
Dining here is better than you’d expect for a resort restaurant – the Thai restaurant in particular caught me off guard with how authentic it was. The main restaurant does solid modern Irish cuisine without getting too precious about it. Breakfast is the full spread you’d want from a five-star place, though it can get a bit hectic when there’s a conference group staying.
If you’re exploring this part of Northern Ireland – maybe doing the Marble Arch Caves or heading over to Belleek Pottery – this makes an excellent base. It’s about ten minutes into Enniskillen proper, close enough that you’re not isolated but far enough out that you feel like you’re actually getting away from things. The 8.8 rating feels about right to me – it’s genuinely excellent without being flawless, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want.
