The drive through the Trossachs is absolutely stunning (especially if you catch it on a clear day), but sometimes these Scottish country hotels can be a bit… well, tired. This one actually surprised me in a good way, though it’s not without its quirks.

The setting is what really gets you – I mean, you’re literally on the shores of Loch Ard, and if you snag one of the lakeview rooms, you’ll wake up to mist rolling off the water and maybe spot some red deer wandering down for a drink. The spa is honestly the highlight here; they’ve got this indoor pool that feels like you’re swimming in a fishbowl overlooking the loch, and the treatment rooms are properly relaxing. I had a hot stone massage after spending the day hiking around Aberfoyle, and it was exactly what my legs needed. The staff in the spa know their stuff too – not just going through the motions like you sometimes get at chain hotels.

Now, the rooms are comfortable enough, though some feel a bit dated (think early 2000s corporate hotel vibes), and honestly, the WiFi can be spotty depending on where you are in the building. But you know what? You’re in the Trossachs – step away from your phone for a bit. The restaurant does solid Scottish fare, though don’t expect anything too adventurous. Their venison is actually quite good, and they source locally which you can taste. Breakfast is the usual hotel spread, but they do proper Scottish porridge and their smoked salmon is decent. Parking is free and easy, which is a blessing since you’ll definitely want a car to explore properly – Queen Elizabeth Forest Park is literally on your doorstep, and you’re only about 20 minutes from the tourist chaos of Loch Katrine if that’s your thing.

The 7.5 rating feels about right to me. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s a solid base for exploring this gorgeous part of Scotland, especially if you want to feel pampered after long days outdoors. Just don’t come expecting cutting-edge luxury – this is more about location and that spa experience. The fact that it’s tucked away in Kinlochard means you get real peace and quiet (apart from the occasional tour bus heading to the Trossachs Pier), which honestly feels pretty rare these days.
