HOTEL OVERVIEW

I’ll be honest – finding Marufukuro tucked away on Kagiya-cho was like discovering a secret that locals had been keeping to themselves. You know how some places in Kyoto try so hard to be traditional that they feel like museum pieces? This isn’t one of those. Walking up to the entrance, there’s this immediate sense that you’ve stumbled onto something genuinely special, not just Instagram-ready.

The thing about staying in Shimogyo-ku is you’re actually living like a Kyoto resident for a few days. I mean, you can walk to Kyoto Station in about ten minutes when you need to, but step outside Marufukuro and you’re surrounded by the kind of narrow streets where locals are hanging laundry and riding bicycles to the corner convenience store. The morning sounds are incredible – temple bells mixing with the gentle clatter of someone preparing breakfast next door. What really got me was the attention to detail that you only notice after you’ve been there a day or two. The tatami mats have this perfect give under your feet (not too soft, not too firm), and honestly, the way they’ve arranged the lighting means you never feel like you’re squinting or sitting in shadows. The staff seem to anticipate what you need before you even ask – which sounds cliché, but it’s true. They suggested this tiny tempura place around the corner that I never would have found on my own, and it ended up being one of the best meals of my trip.

Here’s what I didn’t expect: the quiet. Even though you’re in the heart of the city, the sound just doesn’t carry the same way it does in other neighborhoods. Maybe it’s the way these traditional buildings are constructed, or maybe it’s just that this little pocket of Kagiya-cho has a different rhythm. Either way, I slept better there than I have in months. The only minor thing – and this is really reaching for something to critique – is that the streets around here can be a bit confusing if you’re trying to direct a taxi driver. But honestly, half the charm is getting slightly lost and finding your way back. The whole experience feels like you’re staying in someone’s carefully curated home rather than a hotel, which I guess explains why they’ve managed that 9.7 rating. It’s the kind of place where you find yourself planning your next Kyoto trip before you’ve even checked out.

This place felt like a dream! We had high expectations and the hotel surpassed them all. Every detail was more than perfect, the staff was incredibly friendly, the breakfast was truly impressive and the room was extremely beautiful. We left the hotel feeling so relaxed, we could not have wished for a better getaway in Kyoto. Marufukuro is a gem!

We stayed here for one night as a special treat, but wish we could have stayed longer. This hotel is in a former Nintendo office and warehouse and there are subtle nods to Nintendo throughout the building. The staff are very happy to help. The rooms are immaculate and roomy and the vibe is phenomenal. Wholly recommend!

A wonderful relaxing stay with class and elegance and lovely surprises along the way. A beautiful historical building with a ton of charm and the opportunity to stay in the residence of the Nintendo founder and second CEO.

The receptionist was really professional. When he found out I’m a big Nintendo fan, he recommended a room with lots of Nintendo touches. He also took the time to share some history about the building and details about the room. On top of that, his effortless charm made him a true gentleman. It was a fantastic place.

The room was incredible, with awesome Nintendo history.

What could be improved: A little expensive, but worth it to experience it.
