You know what struck me first about Mauna Lani Point? It’s not technically a hotel at all – it’s actually a collection of condos that feel more like staying at your wealthy uncle’s vacation place than some corporate resort. And honestly, that’s exactly what makes it special on this stretch of the Big Island’s Kohala Coast.

The property sits right on these dramatic black lava rocks where you can watch waves crash below your lanai (and I mean right below – the sound becomes this constant, soothing white noise). Most people drive right past it heading to the Mauna Lani Resort next door, which is sort of perfect because it keeps things quieter here. The units themselves are proper condos with full kitchens, which actually matters more than you’d think since dining options in this area can hit your wallet hard. I mean, you’re looking at $25+ for breakfast at most resort spots nearby. The kitchens aren’t just mini-fridges and microwaves either – we’re talking full-size everything, granite counters, the works.

What really sets this place apart though is the location within the location, if that makes sense. You’re technically part of the Mauna Lani Resort area, so you can walk over and use their beach facilities at Mauna Lani Bay (about a 10-minute walk through some seriously beautiful landscaping). But you’re also tucked away enough that you don’t deal with the constant stream of resort guests and activities. The pools here are smaller but way more peaceful – I spent most mornings there with just a couple other people while the main resort was already buzzing with families and tour groups.

The snorkeling right from the property is actually incredible, which locals will tell you but somehow doesn’t make it into most reviews. There’s this little inlet where the fish seem completely unbothered by people, and the water stays pretty calm even when it’s choppy elsewhere. Just watch the rocks getting in and out – they’re sharp and can be slippery. Also, parking is included and actually abundant, which sounds boring until you’ve tried to park anywhere else along this coast during peak season.

Now look, it’s not perfect – the units can feel a bit dated depending on which one you get (they’re individually owned, so there’s some variation), and don’t expect daily housekeeping like you’d get at a traditional hotel. The trade-off is space, privacy, and that whole “living like a local” vibe that’s hard to find at the big resorts. Plus, you’re still close enough to everything – Waimea’s about 20 minutes if you want to explore upcountry, and you can hit both the Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea resort areas without really driving anywhere.

The 8.1 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be a luxury resort, but for what it is (a really solid condo property in an amazing location), it delivers. Especially if you’re the type who’d rather grill your own fish on a lanai overlooking the Pacific than eat at another resort restaurant.
