Meigetsuso Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of fancy places in Japan, but Meigetsuso actually made me understand why people get so obsessed with traditional ryokans. It’s tucked up in Kaminoyama’s Hayama district – you know, that quieter part where most tourists don’t venture because they’re too busy hitting the main onsen strip. Honestly, that’s exactly what makes this place special.
The moment you pull up (and yes, they have proper parking, which isn’t a given in these mountain towns), you’re looking at this beautifully preserved building that somehow manages to feel both grand and intimate. I mean, we’re talking genuine 5-star treatment here, but without any of that stuffy hotel formality that makes you feel like you can’t touch anything. The staff actually remembers your name after day one, and they’ll casually mention the best times to hit the outdoor baths when the crowds thin out – usually around 6 AM if you’re wondering. The rooms are these gorgeous traditional spaces with proper tatami and futons that are actually comfortable (I was skeptical too), plus they’ve cleverly integrated modern touches without ruining the vibe. You’ll sleep better than you have in months, I promise.
What really sets Meigetsuso apart though is how they handle the whole onsen experience. The mineral-rich waters here are fed by the same Zao volcanic system that makes this region famous, but the setup feels more like a private retreat than a tourist destination. The kaiseki dinners are honestly spectacular – and I’m saying this as someone who’s eaten at Michelin-starred places in Tokyo. They source ingredients from local farms you can literally see from your window, and the presentation is so beautiful you’ll feel guilty eating it. Well, for about two seconds anyway. The only tiny downside? It’s popular enough that you’ll want to book way ahead, especially during autumn when the maples around Kaminoyama are doing their thing. But honestly, with a 9.3 rating and the kind of service that makes you want to extend your stay, that’s hardly surprising. This is the kind of place that reminds you why traditional Japanese hospitality has such a legendary reputation – it’s not just marketing hype, it’s the real deal.
