Look, I’ll be straight with you about the MGM Grand – it’s exactly what you’d expect from a massive Vegas operation, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Walking into that emerald green lobby for the first time is honestly a bit overwhelming, and I mean that in the best way possible. The place is absolutely enormous (we’re talking 5,000+ rooms here), so don’t expect any boutique hotel intimacy, but there’s something oddly comforting about the sheer scale of it all. You know you’re in for the full Vegas experience the moment you step inside.
The location is pretty much unbeatable if you want to be right in the thick of everything on the Strip. You’re literally a few minutes’ walk from New York New York and across from the Tropicana – actually, the pedestrian bridge system makes getting around way easier than you’d think, especially when it’s blazing hot outside or you don’t feel like dealing with the chaos at street level. One thing that surprised me was how well they handle the crowds during check-in, considering how many people are constantly flowing through there. Sure, you might wait a bit during peak times (avoid Sunday afternoons if you can), but the staff actually seems to know what they’re doing, which isn’t always a given at these mega-resorts.
Here’s what I really appreciate about staying here – the rooms are solid without trying to be something they’re not. You get decent space, reliable AC (crucial in Vegas), and blackout curtains that actually work when you need to sleep off a late night. The bathrooms are nothing fancy but they’re clean and functional. Honestly, the soundproofing is better than I expected for a place this size, though if you’re facing the Strip, you’ll definitely hear some street noise – it’s just part of the Vegas soundtrack at this point. The elevators can be a bit of an adventure during busy periods, but that’s the trade-off for staying somewhere this central. What really works is that you’ve got everything you need without leaving the building – decent restaurants (though skip the overpriced coffee shop near the lobby), the casino floor if that’s your thing, and even a pretty good food court that locals actually use. It’s not going to win any design awards, but after spending a day walking the Strip or dealing with conference crowds, you’ll be happy to have a comfortable base camp that doesn’t require a cab ride to get anywhere interesting.
