Millennium Hotel Rotorua

HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what struck me first about the Millennium Hotel Rotorua? The smell – and I mean that in the best way possible. While most of Rotorua has that distinctive sulfur scent from the geothermal activity (which honestly grows on you), this place on Hinemaru Street sits just far enough from the main thermal zones that you get fresh air without losing that authentic Rotorua atmosphere.

The hotel itself feels properly established – not trying too hard to be trendy, but clearly well-maintained in that solid, reliable way you want from a 4-star property. I’ve stayed here twice now, and both times the staff actually remembered small details from check-in, which is rare these days. The rooms are spacious by New Zealand standards (and trust me, that matters), with windows that open wide – something you’ll appreciate if you’re used to stuffy hotel air conditioning. The beds are genuinely comfortable, though I’d recommend asking for a room facing away from the street if you’re a light sleeper. Hinemaru can get a bit busy during the day with tourists heading to and from the various attractions.

What I really appreciate is how they’ve positioned themselves. You’re close enough to walk to Kuirau Park – maybe 15 minutes if you don’t mind a gentle stroll – where you can see the bubbling mud pools without paying admission fees. The Government Gardens and Rotorua Museum area is also walkable, though most guests end up driving because, well, it’s just easier with all the gear you accumulate (you’ll understand once you start collecting geothermal souvenirs). Parking here is straightforward and free, which honestly saves you a headache compared to some places downtown. The front desk staff know the area really well too – they pointed me toward Te Puia during my second visit instead of the more touristy options, and it made all the difference. There’s also a decent restaurant on-site that does a solid job with both local and international dishes, though I’d still recommend venturing out to Eat Streat at least once for the full Rotorua dining experience. The hotel’s location means you’re getting the authentic geothermal town experience without being right in the thick of the tour bus chaos, and after a long day of exploring thermal wonderlands and adventure activities, that balance feels just right.

The pool - my 5 year old love it. The rooms were nice and spacious

What could be improved: Still never quite figured out the towel situation for the pool. You had to get them from the spa which you needed your room swipe and was often unmanned, we gave up after the first visit and just brought our own towels with us.

Being able to have a weekend away with my husband 💕 not worrying about adult kids or grandkids. We lost alot of time through working different shifts so I liked that we could relax, catch up on a few laughs, a couple of wines, hang out in the spa, once the maintainence guy got it sorted. Being able to have a weekend away with my husband 💕 not worrying about adult kids or grandkids. We lost alot of time through working different shifts so I liked that we could relax, catch up on a few laughs, a couple of wines, hang out in the spa, once the maintainence guy got it sorted. Our second time here. Our favorite time out spot. Comfortable, great sleep! Very private. 100% for cleanliness and presentation

What could be improved: No water tap for drinking/to fill up bottles
Had to buy our own drinking water
No microwave to heat up snack food
Spa needing maintenance as soon as we got there it wasnt warm enough so we were sitting in the cold with wet clothes until it got fixed.... wasn't a great first impression but it was absolutely beautiful once sorted.
An information booklet showing what the restaurant & bar has to offer would have been cool to find in the room
This was the deluxe room I was expecting to see maybe some of the already mentioned.

The bed was extremely comfortable.
Lovely bathroom renovation.
Beautiful garden with bridge over it.
Excellent full breakfast options.

What could be improved: The front of reception ignored myself and my son and checked in another customer before us, when I was standing right at the desk before the other customer. My 7 yr old son and I both thought that was very strange.

The room was big with a good view of the garden.

What could be improved: The heater in the room wasn't working as i thought it would work. My room was still cold after engaging the heat mode for a couple of hours.

Great facilities, good location close to everything Rotorua has other offee and friendly staff.

What could be improved: There was a damp smell in the hallway to our room, breakfast was okay but could do with a little more variety.
