Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places claiming to be “boutique” or “spa resorts,” but Mirbeau Inn & Spa actually delivers on that promise in a way that feels authentic rather than forced. The moment you pull up to 851 West Genesee Street, you’re struck by how they’ve managed to create this French countryside vibe that somehow doesn’t feel out of place in upstate New York. I mean, it could’ve easily been cheesy, but the architecture and landscaping are done with enough restraint that it just works.

What really sets this place apart – and honestly, what justifies that 9.4 rating – is how they’ve thought through the entire experience. The spa isn’t just tacked on as an afterthought; it’s integrated into the whole property in a way that makes sense. You know how some hotel spas feel like they’re in a basement somewhere? Not here. The treatment rooms have these huge windows overlooking the gardens, and there’s this indoor/outdoor pool area that I actually found myself using even though I’m not typically a pool person. The rooms themselves hit that sweet spot between luxurious and livable – nice linens and thoughtful touches without being so precious that you’re afraid to actually use anything.

But here’s what I really appreciate about Mirbeau: they understand their location. Skaneateles isn’t trying to be the Hamptons, and neither is this hotel. It’s about forty minutes from Syracuse, tucked into this charming little village that’s built around one of the prettiest lakes in the Finger Lakes region. The hotel feels connected to that setting rather than dropped in from somewhere else. You can walk down to the lake easily enough, though honestly, the property itself is so well-designed that you might find yourself just wandering the grounds instead. They’ve got these walking paths that meander through gardens that change with the seasons – I visited in early fall and the colors were absolutely stunning. Parking is straightforward (always a relief), and the staff seems to actually know the area well enough to give you recommendations that go beyond the obvious tourist spots. The only minor gripe I’d have is that rooms facing the street can pick up a bit of traffic noise, but it’s Skaneateles – we’re not exactly talking about a major highway here. If you’re looking for a place where you can actually unwind without feeling like you’re performing relaxation for Instagram, this is it.
