Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Sanjo PREMIER Overview
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to the Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Sanjo PREMIER – the entrance is tucked away on a narrow street that you’d probably miss if you weren’t looking for it. But that’s actually part of its charm, you know? It sits right in the heart of old Kyoto on Sanjo-dori, which means you’re literally steps away from everything that matters without dealing with the tourist circus that surrounds some of the bigger hotels.
The lobby hit me right away – there’s this massive living wall installation that somehow manages to feel both modern and traditionally Japanese at the same time. I mean, it’s definitely Instagram-worthy, but it doesn’t feel forced or gimmicky. The staff greeted me with that perfect balance of professionalism and warmth that Japanese hospitality is famous for, and check-in was smooth even though my Japanese is… well, let’s just say Google Translate got a workout. What really impressed me was how they handled my early arrival – instead of the usual “rooms aren’t ready until 3 PM” speech, they actually stored my luggage and gave me a detailed map with handwritten notes about nearby temples and the best coffee shops (there’s this tiny place called Vermillion Café about three minutes away that serves incredible matcha lattes, by the way).
The rooms are surprisingly spacious for Japan – I could actually open my suitcase without rearranging the furniture, which anyone who’s stayed in Tokyo will appreciate. The beds are proper Western-style but with these incredibly soft linens that felt like sleeping on a cloud. You know what’s brilliant though? The bathroom setup. Instead of those cramped airplane-style bathrooms you get in most city hotels, they’ve got this separate soaking tub situation that’s deep enough to actually relax in after a day of temple-hopping. The view from my room looked out over the traditional rooftops of Nakagyo-ku – not the most spectacular vista in the world, but there’s something peaceful about watching the morning light hit those old ceramic tiles. Location-wise, you’re about a seven-minute walk to Nishiki Market (perfect for breakfast or weird snacks), and the subway station is close enough that you can easily get to Fushimi Inari or Arashiyama without the hassle of figuring out bus routes. The neighborhood itself is pretty quiet after 9 PM, which I appreciated – you get that authentic residential Kyoto vibe without the noise. Fair warning though: if you’re planning to visit during cherry blossom season, book way ahead and expect to pay premium rates. But honestly, for a five-star hotel that actually delivers on the experience without feeling pretentious or overpriced, this place gets it right.
Guest Reviews
Everything about this place was amazing. The room was larger than the usual in Japan. I loved that there was a gym, and it’s well in the center but not too loud. It is close to everything! I love that there was also a bath tub. The beds were comfy. ...

What could be improved: Nothing. All was good.
This hotel is in an excellent location for getting a good start each day for prime sight seeing across Kyoto, but is in a very cool and chill upscale neighbourhood for strolling at all hours of the day. There are great coffee shops, bakeries, and...
It was near the station and many convenient stores, short walk from the Nishiki market. Great location, clean and beautiful room. Simple and elegant

Everything was perfect. Facilities, staff, location, value.
What could be improved: Nothing
The room was very very good with a lot of space. It would have been nice to have had some draws or shelves to put clothes rather than having to live out of a suitcase. What could be improved: The breakfast could have been much better. There was a...
Beautiful hotel, our king room was generously sized for the local standards. The location is very central and close to a number of attractions. Loved the onsen and the onsite cheese factory.

What could be improved: Nothing to compalin about
I liked everything! We booked a deluxe suite that was on the ground level, which although was beautiful, the windows were frosted (so no view). I asked to be moved to a room with proper windows because our previous hotel in Tokyo had the same issue,...
