HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to the Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Sanjo PREMIER – the entrance is tucked away on a narrow street that you’d probably miss if you weren’t looking for it. But that’s actually part of its charm, you know? It sits right in the heart of old Kyoto on Sanjo-dori, which means you’re literally steps away from everything that matters without dealing with the tourist circus that surrounds some of the bigger hotels.

The lobby hit me right away – there’s this massive living wall installation that somehow manages to feel both modern and traditionally Japanese at the same time. I mean, it’s definitely Instagram-worthy, but it doesn’t feel forced or gimmicky. The staff greeted me with that perfect balance of professionalism and warmth that Japanese hospitality is famous for, and check-in was smooth even though my Japanese is… well, let’s just say Google Translate got a workout. What really impressed me was how they handled my early arrival – instead of the usual “rooms aren’t ready until 3 PM” speech, they actually stored my luggage and gave me a detailed map with handwritten notes about nearby temples and the best coffee shops (there’s this tiny place called Vermillion Café about three minutes away that serves incredible matcha lattes, by the way).

The rooms are surprisingly spacious for Japan – I could actually open my suitcase without rearranging the furniture, which anyone who’s stayed in Tokyo will appreciate. The beds are proper Western-style but with these incredibly soft linens that felt like sleeping on a cloud. You know what’s brilliant though? The bathroom setup. Instead of those cramped airplane-style bathrooms you get in most city hotels, they’ve got this separate soaking tub situation that’s deep enough to actually relax in after a day of temple-hopping. The view from my room looked out over the traditional rooftops of Nakagyo-ku – not the most spectacular vista in the world, but there’s something peaceful about watching the morning light hit those old ceramic tiles. Location-wise, you’re about a seven-minute walk to Nishiki Market (perfect for breakfast or weird snacks), and the subway station is close enough that you can easily get to Fushimi Inari or Arashiyama without the hassle of figuring out bus routes. The neighborhood itself is pretty quiet after 9 PM, which I appreciated – you get that authentic residential Kyoto vibe without the noise. Fair warning though: if you’re planning to visit during cherry blossom season, book way ahead and expect to pay premium rates. But honestly, for a five-star hotel that actually delivers on the experience without feeling pretentious or overpriced, this place gets it right.

Everything about this place was amazing. The room was larger than the usual in Japan. I loved that there was a gym, and it’s well in the center but not too loud. It is close to everything! I love that there was also a bath tub. The beds were comfy.

What could be improved: Nothing.

This hotel is in an excellent location for getting a good start each day for prime sight seeing across Kyoto, but is in a very cool and chill upscale neighbourhood for strolling at all hours of the day. There are great coffee shops, bakeries, and excellent shopping. There are loads of chic restaurants to look up and book ahead of time, and some more relaxed options to stumble upon if you’re going with the flow each day. We enjoyed coffee at the Blue Bottle cafe, sandwiches and baked goods at the Flip Up bakery, and shopping the North Face purple label goods at stores in the immediate hood, and nearby market area.

What could be improved: It’s a Japanese hotel which means you’re going to get some nice touches like the public onsen, skincare and toiletries to take with you to the room, and slippers/pjs. But, the service is just different from western levels. Japan like everywhere seems to be struggling with staffing and I would say the team here is very junior and not very knowledgeable about the neighbourhood. They were unable to make recommendations for dinners, but did offer to navigate the booking pages if required.

It was near the station and many convenient stores, short walk from the Nishiki market. Great location, clean and beautiful room. Simple and elegant

What could be improved: The breakfast could have been much better. There was a very limited selection of fruit, there was no bread of toast despite there being jam and marmalade and the menu for hot food was very limited.

Beautiful hotel, our king room was generously sized for the local standards. The location is very central and close to a number of attractions. Loved the onsen and the onsite cheese factory.

I loved the cheese and the workshop space, but WISH they offered actual classes! I would love to learn how to make mozzarella!

What could be improved: Since we do not eat big breakfast we did not like that the hotel only offered a buffet (fixed price) offering. Ala carte is much preferred for Americans.

I liked everything! We booked a deluxe suite that was on the ground level, which although was beautiful, the windows were frosted (so no view). I asked to be moved to a room with proper windows because our previous hotel in Tokyo had the same issue, which was not great. The staff quickly showed me two different room options (both with lots of sunlight). I was able to pick whichever room I wanted and we moved within minutes. It was seamless and they were so accommodating. The rooms were so clean and beautiful. The hotel smelled incredible and the onsen was so gorgeous. The location was also super. I can’t recommend this hotel enough.

What could be improved: The breakfast could’ve had more Japanese style options in my opinion but otherwise it was great.
