HOTEL OVERVIEW

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places around Lake Kawaguchi, and honestly? Mizno Hotel just gets it right in ways that surprised me. It’s tucked away on Azagawa street – not the main strip where all the tour buses rumble past, but close enough that you’re still a five-minute walk from the lake. The location actually works in your favor because you get these incredible unobstructed views of Mount Fuji without dealing with crowds right outside your window.

The first thing that hit me when I walked in was how quiet everything felt. I mean, you know that particular kind of Japanese attention to detail where nothing creaks or rattles? That’s this place. My room faced west (request this if you can), and honestly, watching the light change on Fuji throughout the day became this unexpected ritual. The staff – and I’m usually pretty awkward with my terrible Japanese – somehow made everything feel effortless. Check-in was quick, they had actual recommendations for hiking trails that weren’t just the obvious touristy ones, and when I mentioned wanting to catch sunrise at the lake, they quietly left a thermos of coffee outside my door at 4:30 AM.

What really sold me though was the practical stuff that other places seem to miss. The parking is actually adequate (trust me, this matters when you’re driving around Fujikawaguchiko), the walls are properly soundproofed, and the wi-fi doesn’t mysteriously disappear every time more than three people try to use it. The onsen situation is smaller than some of the bigger hotels, but it’s never crowded – I think most guests don’t even realize it’s there. The water has this slightly sulfuric smell that means it’s the real deal, and soaking there around sunset while looking out at the mountain… well, it’s sort of ridiculously perfect. The breakfast isn’t trying to be everything to everyone either – just really solid Japanese and Western options that actually taste like someone cares about the ingredients. I keep thinking about their tamagoyaki, which sounds silly, but it was just done right. If you’re planning to visit during autumn (and you should), book way ahead because apparently word is getting out about this place. The 9.4 rating makes sense once you’re there – it’s not flashy or trying too hard, just genuinely thoughtful hospitality in a spot that lets Fuji-san do most of the heavy lifting.

We loved the view of Mt. Fuji, the comfy bed, the room size and the room layout. My husband loved everything about the bathroom. It was huge, the shower was separate from the toilet. I had tons of room to get ready in the morning and the mirror was amazing. The private onsen was nice too.

What could be improved: The uphill location was not convenient. Walking and biking up the steep hill was difficult and not fun. We got to kawaguchiko quite early and the shuttle service was not available till after 2pm. This is so badly inconvenient. We had to hail a taxi and this was proven hard as we had no phone number. Luckily, there was lots of cabs around.

I was not a fan of having to book dinner at the hotel 2 days early. The restaurant was not overly busy when we went. The shabu shabu dinner was alright, it was not a big portion for 5500 pp and was nothing to rave about.

One of the receptionists was not very friendly and looked annoyed when I asked her questions about taxis and booking the private onsen.

The room we got, had a balcony but it had a metal bar that got in the way of our view of Fujisan.

Unbeatable views of Mt Fuji from my room both inside and outside on the spacious deck. Also can’t beat the views from the onsen.

Very clean and beautifully designed and decorated. Comfortable beds and quality linens.

What could be improved: Hard to get dinner reservation

Loved everything! Staff are absolutely wonderful, this is one of the best places I have stayed. Ofcourse the view from the balcony in the room is amazing, with space to sit and relax. The public onsen and private rooftop onsen are wonderful watching the sunset with a view to Fuji. Don’t miss out on breakfast! Pick up from the train station and shuttle to town also worked really smoothly, just ask the helpful staff as we were able to arrive early to drop our bags off. The hotel lounge area is also very interesting and enjoyable, lots of art, books, relaxing and comfortable. Will always remember our stay here and recommend. Thankyou!

Cute hotel with elevated view over the lake. Unfortunately Mt Fuiji was under thick cloud/snow during our stay, which was disappointing as the room faced the view, but not much you can do about that! The shuttle pick up from the station was quick and efficient. Also used the private bath on the rooftop, again with nice views despite the lack of mountain. Also did the french dinner, which was an easy option and pretty good.

Hotel is utterly charming, full of beautiful artworks, leather sofas, interesting books. Barman and staff are so kind. Breakfasts were delicious. Views of Mount Fuji and the lake are just fabulous.
