You know what hits you first when you walk into the Moana Surfrider? It’s not just that you’re literally steps from Waikiki Beach – though honestly, being right there on the sand is pretty incredible – it’s this weird mix of old Hawaii grandeur and, well, the reality that you’re in the middle of one of the world’s busiest beach strips. The lobby has this gorgeous colonial feel with those high ceilings and period furniture, but then you hear the constant hum of Kalakaua Avenue traffic just outside. It’s kind of charming in a chaotic way, actually.
The thing about this place is that it really is the “First Lady of Waikiki” like they claim – it’s been here since 1901, and you can feel that history. I mean, the Banyan Court is legitimately beautiful, especially if you snag a table for breakfast before the tour groups descend around 9 AM. The rooms vary quite a bit depending on which wing you’re in (the historic Banyan Wing feels more authentic but can be a bit snug), and honestly, if you’re facing the ocean, you’ll forget about pretty much everything else. The beach access is unbeatable – you’re talking about walking maybe thirty seconds from the lobby to some of the best sand on Waikiki Beach, right near where the surf lessons happen.
Here’s what actually matters though: this isn’t going to be your quiet romantic hideaway. Kalakaua gets loud, especially weekend nights when people are bar-hopping between Duke’s and the other spots nearby. But if you want to be in the thick of everything – walking distance to the International Market Place, easy access to the buses that’ll take you to Diamond Head or downtown – this is your spot. The staff genuinely knows their stuff about the island, and I’ve had concierges give me tips about hiking trails and local food spots that weren’t just the obvious tourist traps. Parking is valet only and yeah, it’s pricey (welcome to Waikiki), but at least you don’t have to circle blocks looking for street parking like you would at some of the smaller hotels. The pool area is decent though not huge, and the spa is actually really solid if you need to decompress after a long flight. With that 8.4 rating, you’re getting what you pay for – it’s not perfect, but it’s got character and location going for it in a big way.
