Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Waikiki Beach Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Waikiki Beach feels like stepping into Hawaii’s golden age — and I mean that in the best possible way. This four-star property has been welcoming guests since 1901, making it the grande dame of Honolulu’s hotel scene. The colonial-style architecture with its wraparound verandas and white columns creates this timeless elegance that somehow never feels stuffy. You know what really gets me? The way they’ve preserved that old-world charm while keeping everything thoroughly modern and comfortable.
The Waikiki Advantage
Here’s the thing about location — you’re literally steps from one of the world’s most famous beaches, but the Moana sits on what I’d call the sweet spot of Waikiki. You’re close enough to Diamond Head that you can actually see it properly, yet far enough from the cruise ship crowds that descend on the western end. The hotel’s beachfront position means you get that perfect stretch of sand right out front, and honestly, the beach service here makes a difference. I’ve watched guests from other hotels walk over just to see what they’re missing.
Rooms with Character
The room I stayed in had this perfect balance — not trying too hard to be trendy, but definitely not stuck in the past either. The oceanview accommodations are worth the splurge if you can swing it, because waking up to that endless blue horizon never gets old. What surprised me was how quiet everything felt, even with Kalakaua Avenue right there. The Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed lives up to its name, and after long days exploring the island, that matters more than you might think.
Dining and Amenities
The Beachhouse at the Moana restaurant serves up solid Hawaiian regional cuisine, though I’ll be honest — the setting steals the show more than the food. Eating breakfast on that veranda while watching surfers catch their first waves of the day? That’s the kind of moment that makes you forget about everything else. The spa treatments incorporate traditional Hawaiian healing practices, which feels authentic rather than gimmicky. And here’s a practical note — parking is available but pricey, so factor that in if you’re planning to rent a car.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both historic and relevant. Couples particularly seem drawn to the romantic atmosphere — there’s something about those sunset views from the Banyan Veranda that just works. The staff genuinely knows their stuff about the island, so when they recommend a hiking trail or a local food truck, you can trust they’re not just reading from a script. It’s not the flashiest resort on the beach, but it has this understated confidence that comes from being the original. When you’re here, you’re not just staying at a hotel — you’re part of Waikiki’s story.
