You’ll catch the sunset hitting the mountains, and honestly, it’s one of those moments where you just stop scrolling your phone and actually look.

What really sold me on Montrose Estate though is how well they understand their location. They’re not trying to be a city hotel dropped in the countryside – they lean into being your base camp for the Canterbury region. The concierge actually skis (crazy concept, right?) and can tell you which runs are good on a powder day versus when it’s been scraped down to ice. Parking is easy and free, which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with ski boots and gear. The restaurant sources a lot locally, and I mean properly local – not just “New Zealand lamb” but actually from farms you could drive to if you wanted. Breakfast runs until a reasonable hour because they get that you’re not here for business meetings at 6 AM. And here’s a small thing that matters: the WiFi actually works throughout the property, so you can post those mountain photos without hunting for a signal. The only minor downside? It books up fast during ski season, so you can’t really decide last minute to extend your stay. But honestly, with a 9.9 rating, that’s probably not surprising.
