Munnar Tea Hills Resort – MTHR

Look, I’ll be honest with you – when I first saw Munnar Tea Hills Resort tucked away in Thattathimukku (yeah, try saying that three times fast), I wasn’t sure what to expect. The drive up through Chithirapuram is pretty winding, and you know how sometimes these mountain resorts can be all hype? But this place actually delivers on the whole “wake up to rolling tea estates” promise. I mean, you’re literally surrounded by those perfectly manicured green hills that make Munnar famous, and in the early morning when the mist rolls in, it’s honestly like staying inside a postcard.

The resort itself has that colonial-meets-modern Kerala vibe going on – you know, all dark wood and warm lighting, but with proper air conditioning and decent WiFi (which isn’t always a given up here in the hills). What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. No honking rickshaws or street noise like you’d get down in Kochi, just the occasional rustle of tea bushes in the wind. The staff genuinely knows the area too, which made a huge difference when I wanted to hit the less touristy plantation walks. They pointed me toward some trails that most visitors never see – the kind where you’ll spot wild elephants if you’re lucky (and quiet).

Now, here’s the thing about this place – it’s got that five-star classification, but the 7.2 rating tells you what you need to know. It’s comfortable and the location is killer, but don’t expect the Taj level of service or those Instagram-perfect infinity pools. The restaurant serves solid Kerala food (the fish curry is actually pretty great), though breakfast can get crowded during peak season when all the Bangalore families come up to escape the heat. Parking’s never an issue, which is nice because some of these hill station hotels squeeze you into impossible spots. Check-in was smooth when I was there, though I’d imagine things might slow down during monsoon season when half the roads up here turn into mini waterfalls. If you’re planning to explore beyond the resort – and you definitely should, because Mattupetty Dam and the tea museum are worth the trip – this location gives you easy access without being right in the middle of Munnar’s tourist chaos.
