I’ll be honest – I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Neeleshwar Hermitage. The approach through Kasargod district is pretty rural, and you’re basically following signs to this bridge called Padankkad, which sounds like the middle of nowhere. But then you actually arrive, and it’s this stunning property that feels like someone’s incredibly tasteful private estate decided to welcome guests.

The thing about North Kerala that most people don’t realize is how different it is from the backwaters everyone talks about further south. This stretch near Nīleshwar is quieter, more authentic – you’re getting the real Kerala experience without the tour bus crowds. The Hermitage sits right on this gorgeous stretch of beach, and I mean right on it. You can literally walk from your cottage onto sand that’s often completely empty except for the occasional fisherman checking his nets in the early morning. The sound of waves is constant but not overwhelming, more like a gentle white noise that actually helps you sleep better than you have in months.

What really sets this place apart is the attention to detail that you only notice after you’ve been there a day or two. The cottages are designed with these traditional Kerala architectural elements – the red tile roofs, the wooden details – but everything feels fresh and well-maintained. The staff knows your name by day two, and they’re genuinely helpful without being intrusive. I remember asking about getting to the local temple, and instead of just giving directions, they arranged for their driver to take me and wait while I explored. That’s the kind of service you get when a place has a 9.2 rating and actually deserves it.

The food situation is honestly excellent, which isn’t always a given at resort properties. They source a lot of ingredients locally, and you can taste the difference – the fish comes from boats you can see from your terrace, and the spices are so fresh they’re almost aggressive in the best way. I actually learned to cook a few dishes in their kitchen during a rainy afternoon, which wasn’t something I’d planned but turned into one of my favorite memories of the trip.

You know what I really appreciated? The place feels substantial but not overdone. There’s a pool if you want it, but the ocean is right there, so why wouldn’t you just swim in the Arabian Sea? The spa treatments are lovely – I had a massage that used techniques I’d never experienced before, something traditional to the region. But they’re not pushing wellness packages on you every time you turn around.

If you’re looking for nightlife or shopping, this isn’t your spot. The nearest town is Nīleshwar, which is charming but small, and you’re definitely committing to a more relaxed pace of life. But if you want to experience Kerala without the tourist infrastructure, if you want to wake up to an empty beach and fall asleep to the sound of waves, this place delivers on every level. The 5-star rating isn’t just about thread count – it’s about the whole experience feeling effortless and authentic at the same time.
