New Haven Motel

3162 Great North Road, 0600 Auckland, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what? I’ve driven past New Haven Motel on Great North Road probably a hundred times over the years, and I honestly never gave it much thought until I actually needed a place to stay during Auckland’s marathon weekend when everything else was booked solid. Turns out, this unassuming 3-star spot is actually a bit of a hidden gem – though I mean that in the most realistic way possible, not the overused travel blog sense.
The thing about Great North Road is that it’s one of those classic Auckland arterials that locals use to avoid the motorway mess, so you’re not exactly in tourist central here. But that’s actually part of what makes this place work. You’re still only about 15 minutes from the CBD if you time it right (avoid 7-9am and 4-6pm like the plague), and honestly, the lack of tour buses and backpacker crowds makes for a much more peaceful stay. The motel itself has that classic Kiwi roadside vibe – clean, straightforward, no pretensions. The rooms smell like proper cleaning products rather than that overwhelming floral stuff some places use, and the beds are actually decent. I was expecting one of those mattresses that feels like a deflated air mattress, but I slept surprisingly well.
What really impressed me was the attention to small details that you don’t always get at this price point. The shower pressure is properly strong – something you definitely can’t take for granted in Auckland – and there’s enough hot water for a long shower without that gradual temperature drop that makes you do the cold-water dance. The staff genuinely seem to care about the place too, which shows in how well-maintained everything is. Sure, it’s not fancy, but there’s something refreshing about a place that knows exactly what it is and does it well. The parking is easy and free (which, if you’ve tried to park anywhere in central Auckland lately, you’ll appreciate), and the traffic noise isn’t as bad as you’d expect – maybe because the building sits back from the road a bit. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I needed somewhere reliable without the premium price tag of the city hotels. Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you.

Great location, clean and comfortable unit. Just a shout out to the housekeepers - they made the extra effort to arrange the toys on my daughters bed so nicely, she got a real kick out of that when we got back in the afternoon.

Just where we needed to be for our trip
What could be improved: It was just perfect but the only thing I did not like was it was hard getting out onto the road

Absolutely fabulous bed - so comfortable and beautifully made up. It was the best night's sleep I've had in ages! Clean room and lovely hot, powerful shower.
Brilliant location ten mins walk to Lynmall.
What could be improved: Spa pool was tepid so we didn't bother using it.
