HOTEL OVERVIEW

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Hokkaido, and Nozo Hotel genuinely surprised me – in the best way possible. It’s tucked away on Kitanomine-cho, which honestly sounds like just another residential street until you realize you’re literally a five-minute walk from Furano’s ski lifts. I mean, you can hear the gondolas running in the morning, but it’s not that jarring mechanical noise that keeps you up at night.

The whole place has this understated thing going on that I really appreciated. You know how some hotels try too hard to be “authentically Japanese” and end up feeling like a theme park? Not here. The lobby’s got these massive windows that frame the surrounding hills perfectly, and there’s always this faint smell of cedar – not from some artificial air freshener, but from the actual wood they used throughout the building. Check-in was refreshingly smooth too; the staff switched between Japanese and English effortlessly, and they actually knew useful stuff like which convenience store stayed open latest (it’s the FamilyMart down toward the station, by the way) and when the local onsen got crowded.

What really got me though was how they’ve thought about the small things that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The rooms have proper blackout curtains – crucial when you’re dealing with those bright Hokkaido mornings after a late night. There’s enough space to actually unpack your stuff, which sounds basic but you’d be amazed how many places skimp on storage. The heating system works quietly, which is huge during winter months when some hotels sound like they’re operating a small aircraft engine in your room. Honestly, the only minor thing that bugged me was the bathroom lighting – it’s a bit harsh for those middle-of-the-night moments, but that’s really reaching for complaints.

The location is what seals the deal though. You’re close enough to walk to Furano’s main drag when you want that tourist experience, but far enough away that you feel like you’re staying where locals might actually choose to live. There’s this little ramen shop about two blocks down that doesn’t appear in any guidebooks but serves the kind of miso ramen that makes you understand why people get obsessive about this stuff. And if you’re here during lavender season – well, you can actually see the purple fields from some of the upper floor rooms without fighting crowds for the view. The 9.0 rating makes complete sense once you’ve been there; it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but everything they do, they do really well.

Breakfast was really good, but I thought a bit too expensive for what it was.

What could be improved: I think that they should have towels in the onsen (not bring them from your room). They should label the ski locker room a bit more clearly.

What could be improved: The dinner menu was poor and very very expensive. Not good value for money as the food was not exceptional. Breakfast was a stark contrast.

Access to a gym and cosy restaurant/bar. Onsen was amazing at the end of the day with both an indoor bath, outdoor bath, cold plunge and sauna. Ski locker room was a nice touch with boot drying facilities. Staff were super helpful and lovely. Washing & drying facilities were 500¥ per load and easy to use.

What could be improved: Nothing!

What could be improved: Our one gripe is that the hotel rooms are quite warm and they only provide doonas, which are far too hot. I suggest they provide the option of a sheet or thin blanket.
