You know what struck me first about Oceanview Retreat? It’s actually in an apartment building – which might sound weird for a hotel, but hear me out. Being on the third floor of this modern complex on Beach Road means you get these incredible views without the typical hotel lobby chaos. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from Tahunanui Beach, and trust me, that’s the good part of the beach where locals hang out, not some touristy strip.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re living in Nelson rather than just visiting. There’s this great little café about three blocks down that does proper flat whites (the owner’s a bit grumpy but the coffee’s worth it), and you can walk to the Saturday market without dealing with parking – which, let’s be real, is a nightmare in Nelson during summer. The apartment itself feels more like staying at a friend’s place than a hotel room. The kitchen’s actually functional, not one of those tiny hotel kitchenettes where you can barely boil water. I ended up cooking dinner a couple nights because there’s a New World supermarket just up the road, and honestly, after a day of hiking or wine tasting, sometimes you just want to crash on the couch with takeaways.

What really sold me though was stepping out onto that balcony in the morning. You get this view across Tasman Bay that changes completely depending on the weather – some days it’s all moody and dramatic with clouds rolling over the hills, other days it’s so clear you can see the Marlborough Sounds. The beach below gets busy around 10 AM with dog walkers and joggers, but early morning? It’s just you and maybe a few surfers checking the waves. The whole setup feels pretty sophisticated for a 4-star place – the decor’s modern without being sterile, and they’ve actually got decent Wi-Fi, which matters if you’re trying to work remotely or upload photos without waiting forever. Only minor complaint is that the walls are a bit thin, so if you get neighbors who come in late, you’ll probably hear them. But honestly, for the price point and that location, it’s pretty hard to beat. Plus, the host was really responsive when I had questions about local hiking tracks – gave me way better recommendations than any tourist brochure.
