You know what struck me first about the Kariyushi Resort EXES Onna? It’s actually tucked away in this quieter stretch of Onna Village where you’re not fighting crowds just to get to the beach. I mean, most people flock to the busier resort areas further south, but this spot on Nakama Yashibaru road feels like you’ve discovered something the tour groups haven’t figured out yet.

The resort itself is honestly impressive without being flashy about it – which is pretty refreshing for a five-star place. The lobby has these floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the East China Sea perfectly, and there’s this subtle Ryukyu design influence throughout that doesn’t feel forced or touristy. Check-in was smooth (they actually had English-speaking staff who seemed genuinely helpful, not just going through the motions), and the parking situation is way better than some of the cramped resort lots I’ve dealt with in Okinawa. What really got me though was stepping out onto our balcony that first evening – you can hear the waves but it’s not that overwhelming crash you get at some beachfront places, more like a constant gentle backdrop that actually helps you sleep.

The beach access is where this place really shines, honestly. It’s this pristine stretch that feels almost private, especially in the early mornings before other guests wake up. The water’s that incredible Okinawan turquoise that looks fake in photos but somehow looks even better in person. They’ve got decent snorkeling right off the beach too – saw some decent fish without having to swim out too far. The resort restaurant surprised me actually; I was expecting typical hotel food but they’re doing some interesting fusion of Okinawan and contemporary Japanese cuisine. Try the goya champuru if you’re feeling adventurous (it’s bitter melon, don’t say I didn’t warn you), but even their more standard dishes had this freshness that speaks to good local sourcing. One small thing – the rooms are beautifully appointed but the AC can be a bit aggressive, so pack a light layer for sleeping. Also, if you’re planning to explore beyond the resort, you’ll definitely want a rental car since taxis aren’t super frequent in this area. But honestly, with a 9.1 rating, this place delivers on pretty much everything you’d want from an Okinawan beach retreat without the pretension or the crowds that come with some of the bigger name resorts.
