Our Habitas Atacama

HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what struck me first about Our Habitas Atacama? It’s not trying to be a hotel at all – and I mean that in the best way possible. Walking up to the property on Domingo Atienza, you’d almost miss it if you weren’t looking, which is actually perfect because San Pedro de Atacama gets overrun with tour groups during peak season. The whole place feels like someone took the concept of a luxury desert camp and actually made it work without any of that fake glamping nonsense you see everywhere now.

The location is honestly brilliant once you understand San Pedro’s layout. You’re far enough from Caracoles street (where all the restaurants and souvenir shops blast music until late) to actually sleep, but close enough that you can walk to dinner without needing a taxi. I stayed there in August – peak winter season – and while the days were perfect, those desert nights get seriously cold. The rooms handle it well though, and there’s something pretty magical about sitting by their fire pits under that massive Atacama sky. The staff actually knows their astronomy too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re at 2,400 meters altitude with zero light pollution.

What really sets this place apart is how they’ve figured out the balance between comfort and authenticity. The architecture works with the desert landscape instead of fighting it – lots of natural materials, earth tones, that whole thing – but it doesn’t feel forced or Instagram-fake. The food program is solid too, focusing on local ingredients and techniques, though honestly the portions can be a bit small for the price point. Check-in was smooth, no issues with our early arrival, and they actually have proper parking which matters if you’re doing the self-drive thing through the desert. The 8.2 rating feels about right – it’s definitely a 5-star experience, but there are small details that keep it from being perfect. The Wi-Fi can be spotty (though let’s be real, you’re in the middle of the Atacama, not downtown Santiago), and some of the common areas get pretty busy during sunset hours when everyone’s trying to get those golden hour photos. Still, if you’re planning to use this as a base for exploring the flamingo reserves, Valle de la Luna, or the geysers up at El Tatio, you’ll appreciate coming back to somewhere that feels like a proper retreat rather than just another place to crash.

We loved the room and the staff.

What could be improved: The pool. The water was always freezing. It shoult be heated.

What could be improved: from the first of April 2025 the hotel is charging 25USD for take away breakfast even if the breakfast is already included in the room.
We asked to discuss with the manager (Oscar), he came at the restaurant at 10 meters from us and ignored us. This manager doesn't care about his clients and treat them as ATM, this attitude is absolutely unacceptable.

no mini bar in the room
no coffee machine and no boiler for the tea in the room
no information received at the check-in such as astronomy tour offered by the hotel.
no information of what is included in the breakfast apart of the buffet (fried eggs, avocado toast).
Heating system doesn't work in the room, they offered blankets.

on booking.com they claim to be a 5 stars, I absolutely don't agree.

This hotel has a truly unique and atmospheric vibe. The rooms create a really cool and authentic experience. Room temperature was perfect during our stay. The housekeeping team was very attentive - when we had some ants in the room, they responded quickly and took care of it. The territory is beautiful, filled with cactuses, pampas grass. The star-watching evenings and welcome ceremony were a nice touch. I also appreciated the convenient breakfast to go for my excursion day.

What could be improved: The restaurant experience was disappointing. Most of the staff didn’t speak English (except for one guy), and service was extremely slow. If you sat on the terrace or by the pool, no one would come to you. The way the staff ignored waving or calling felt almost demonstrative, which made the experience even more frustrating. The food itself was just average.
The pool was cold, so unfortunately we couldn’t use it.
The smell in the evening was not good, but I understand that the irrigation in the desert could be tricky

What could be improved: The only discordant note was the overpriced treatments in the "spa". A very basic structure where the menu includes a range of new age holistic Indian and yogic purification practices that sounded not too credible at the price over $100. It just felt inauthentic.

Very sympathetic construction of mud huts, thatched roofs and rooftop terraces. Very comfortable, very quiet. An oasis in the desert. Certainly not glamorous or glitzy. Very sympathetic construction of mud huts, thatched roofs and rooftop terraces. Very comfortable, very quiet. An oasis in the desert. Certainly not glamorous or glitzy. Just really peaceful and interesting keeping with the environment. The staff were outstanding. They couldn’t do enough for us. We were offered breakfast picnics when we had early starts. A very welcoming atmosphere

What could be improved: The food on the restaurant was very disappointing. There was so much potential to do more, but it didn’t deliver. Breakfast was ok

Staff were really great. Manager Nicolas was welcoming, extremely friendly and very professional. Restaurant staff were warm, energetic and created a great atmosphere

What could be improved: There were issues with the booking (not a hotel fault but their centralized booking center). I’d also suggest installing AirCons in the rooms.

This is a fabulous hotel set apart from the hustle & bustle of central San Pedro - an oasis within an oasis. The rooms are wonderful: comfortable, stylish (in an earthy and unique way), and well-appointed. The hotel grounds are beautiful and well-maintained, attracting a lot of bird life as a result. The staff could not have been nicer or more accommodating to us, and really went out of their way to look after us during our stay. Overall, it was a superb experience.

What could be improved: The hotel is an approx. 10 minute walk from the center of town, along a dusty road. This didn’t bother us (and there actually aren’t any high-quality hotels in the center itself), but flagging as a potential concern for other travelers.

Stylish. Great room.

What could be improved: Somehow it lacked soul. Large for a boutique hotel. Much more expensive than the tiny more delightful hotel we stayed in earlier in San Pedro. Quite a faff taking luggage to your room and nobody offered to help.
