HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places on Kauai, and the OUTRIGGER on Kauai Beach Drive hits this sweet spot that’s honestly pretty rare. You know how some resorts try too hard to be fancy and end up feeling stuffy? This isn’t that. When you pull up, there’s this immediate sense of… I don’t know, authenticity maybe? The lobby opens right up to the ocean breeze, and you can actually hear the waves from check-in, which sounds cheesy but it’s genuinely nice after that flight into Lihue.
The thing about this place – and locals will tell you this – is that it sits on one of the more swimmable stretches of beach on the east side. A lot of Kauai’s coastline is gorgeous but rough, especially in winter, but Kalapaki Beach here stays relatively calm year-round. I mean, you’re still dealing with Hawaiian ocean conditions, but my kids could actually play in the water without me having a heart attack every five minutes. The resort’s pool area sprawls out toward the beach in this way that doesn’t feel too separate from the natural landscape, if that makes sense. There are these little nooks with loungers where you can escape the midday sun, and honestly, the pool bar makes a solid mai tai – not too sweet like some tourist traps.
What really sold me on the place was the small stuff, though. The elevators aren’t constantly breaking down (you’d be surprised how often that happens in beach hotels), the air conditioning actually works without sounding like a jet engine, and the housekeeping staff genuinely seems to care about their work. The spa is tucked away on the property in this spot where you forget you’re at a resort at all – it’s got this zen garden thing going on that actually works. Room-wise, well, it’s a 4-star property so don’t expect brand-new everything, but the oceanview rooms on the higher floors are pretty spectacular, especially at sunset. You’ll want to request something facing west if possible, trust me on that one. The resort sits right where you can easily hit up Nawiliwili Harbor if you’re doing any boat tours, and it’s maybe ten minutes from the airport, which is clutch when you’re dealing with early morning departures. Parking’s included, which saves you like $25 a night compared to some places. Is it perfect? No – the resort shows its age in spots, and the restaurants are decent but not mind-blowing. But there’s something about waking up here, grabbing coffee, and walking straight onto that beach that just works. It feels like Hawaii without the resort feeling fake, you know?
