Paihia Beach Resort & Spa Hotel

130 Marsden Road, 0200 Paihia, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ll be straight with you about Paihia Beach Resort & Spa – it’s one of those places that hits the sweet spot between being polished enough for a proper getaway but not so fancy that you feel weird wearing flip-flops in the lobby. The location on Marsden Road is honestly perfect because you’re literally a two-minute walk from the main Paihia waterfront, but far enough back that you’re not dealing with the ferry crowds and tour bus noise at 7 AM. I mean, you can still hear the occasional late-night revelers wandering back from the Duke of Marlborough, but it’s more ambient than annoying.
What really sold me on this place – and I’ve stayed at probably six different spots in Paihia over the years – is how they’ve managed to feel like a proper resort without losing that relaxed Bay of Islands vibe. The spa actually knows what it’s doing (I’ve had some questionable massages in Northland, trust me), and the pool area catches the afternoon sun perfectly if you time it right. You know what’s really smart? They’ve got this sort of terraced layout that takes advantage of the slope, so even the rooms that aren’t technically “sea view” still catch glimpses of the water through the pohutukawa trees. The staff genuinely seem to know the area too – not just the obvious tourist stuff, but they pointed me toward this little walking track behind the Opua Store that I never would’ve found otherwise.
Here’s the thing though – and this is important if you’re planning around the busy season – December through February gets pretty hectic, and while the hotel handles it well, parking can get tight and you’ll want to book restaurant tables early. But honestly, that’s Paihia in summer for you. The shoulder seasons are where this place really shines because you get all the amenities without the chaos, plus the weather’s still gorgeous most days. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid four-star – nothing groundbreaking, but the beds are actually comfortable (not always a given in tourist towns), and the bathrooms are properly updated. I appreciated that they don’t go overboard with the “tropical paradise” theming that some Bay of Islands places lean into – it feels more like a quality New Zealand hotel that happens to be in a beautiful spot rather than trying to be somewhere else entirely. If you’re using it as a base for exploring the wider Bay of Islands, the location makes sense, and if you just want to park yourself somewhere nice and comfortable in Paihia itself, well, you could do a lot worse.

Nice facility, great location,
What could be improved: Room smelt very musty on arrival, it could have done with more ventilation + a fan in the bathroom.
We brought some air freshener and opened sliding doors whichever helped big time.
Otherwise it was fine. Thanks

Spacious studio. Large balcony facing the pool area and the bay. Just perfect. Great location. Free parking. Restaurant was fabulous. Clean, quiet and comfortable. What could be improved: I would suggest placing a handrail alongside the toilet as they are lowset and for people with disabilities, its very hard to manage getting on/off toilet. The...

Graham from Australia (27 April 2025)
Very comfortable spa room on 4th floor with lovely views over the bay.
Hamish from New Zealand (26 April 2025)
Great position. Love the pool. Clean and comfortable rooms.
What could be improved: Very bright lights outside the bedrooms on the third floor, blackout curtains would have helped.
Unable to access streaming services on the TVs.
Kerry from New Zealand (24 April 2025)
The view from our room. Easy check in and check out
What could be improved: I thought the room was a bit dated
Christine from New Zealand (31 March 2025)
View amazing outlook onto pool very resort like.
What could be improved: The bathroom (wet room ) lacked anything to put toiletries so I moved an outdoor chair in to act as table . The restaurant looked lovely but the menu limited so we didn’t dine there. We had been to Charlottes Kitchen the previous night and menu was much the same.
