You know what struck me first about 36 Palms? It’s actually tucked away on this quieter stretch of the Munambam Road – not right in the thick of Cherai Beach’s busier spots, which honestly works in its favor. I mean, you’re still close enough to walk to the main beach area, maybe 10 minutes tops, but you escape that constant buzz of scooters and vendors that can get pretty intense during peak season.

The whole place has this laid-back boutique vibe that feels authentic rather than trying too hard. The owners clearly put thought into the details – there’s this nice mix of traditional Kerala architecture with modern touches that doesn’t feel forced. What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed the palm trees (hence the name, obviously) to create these natural little pockets of shade around the property. The rooms are solid for a 3-star – nothing fancy, but clean and comfortable with decent AC, which you’ll definitely need if you’re visiting between March and May. Actually, the staff here knows the area really well, and they’ll steer you toward the better local spots rather than just the touristy ones. They told me about this little toddy shop about five minutes down the road that serves incredible fish curry – the kind of place you’d never find on your own.

Location-wise, you’re in a sweet spot for exploring northern Kerala. Cherai Beach itself is gorgeous – less crowded than Kovalam or Varkala, with that nice stretch of golden sand and backwaters on one side, Arabian Sea on the other. But here’s the thing most people don’t realize: you’re also perfectly positioned for day trips to Fort Kochi (about 30 minutes by local bus or auto), and the backwater tours from nearby Kumbakonam are way less touristy than the Alleppey ones everyone talks about. The hotel can arrange transportation, though honestly, renting a scooter gives you so much more freedom to explore those winding coastal roads. Parking’s not an issue here either, which is refreshing. The 8.0 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow you away, but it does what it promises well. Breakfast is simple but fresh, with proper South Indian options alongside the usual continental stuff. One small thing – the WiFi can be spotty during evening hours when everyone’s online, but that might actually be a blessing if you’re trying to properly disconnect. The whole area gets this amazing golden light in the late afternoon, and sitting in their little garden area with a beer while listening to the distant sound of waves is pretty much perfect.
