You know what struck me first about the Plymouth International? It’s actually got character – and I mean that in the best way. Sitting right at the corner of Courtenay and Leach, you’re basically in the heart of New Plymouth without feeling like you’re stuck in some concrete jungle. The building itself has this solid, no-nonsense vibe that somehow manages to feel both professional and welcoming. I’ve stayed at plenty of four-star places that try way too hard, but this one just… gets it right.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to explore properly. You’re a quick stroll to the Coastal Walkway (which, trust me, you absolutely have to do – especially around sunset), and the CBD is right there when you need coffee or a decent meal. I loved that I could walk to Puke Ariki in about five minutes, and if you’re into the arts scene, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is practically around the corner. The staff actually know the area too, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many hotels have people who just point you toward Google Maps. Here, they’ll tell you which café does the best flat white and when the farmers market runs.

What really won me over though were the little things that show someone’s paying attention. The rooms are proper comfortable – not trying to be boutique-fancy, just genuinely well thought out. Good blackout curtains (seriously important when you’re jet-lagged), actually hot showers with decent water pressure, and beds that don’t feel like they came from a budget motel. The Wi-Fi works everywhere, which honestly shouldn’t be noteworthy in 2024 but here we are. Parking was straightforward too – none of that circling-the-block nonsense you get in some city centers. The whole place runs smoothly without making a big deal about it, if that makes sense. I mean, when you’re getting that 8.5 rating, it’s usually because they’re nailing the fundamentals while adding just enough extra touches to make you remember why you chose them. It’s the kind of place where you’d happily bring your parents for a weekend, or use as a base for exploring Taranaki properly.
