Polo Orchid Resort Cherrapunjee

You know what surprised me most about Polo Orchid Resort? It’s literally perched right there by Nohsngithiang Falls – and I mean literally, not the way people usually use that word. When you wake up in the morning, you can hear the water cascading down before you even open your curtains. The location is honestly pretty incredible, though you’ll want to brace yourself for the winding drive up there (typical Meghalaya mountain roads, so take some motion sickness pills if you’re prone to that sort of thing).

The resort itself has this sort of rustic-meets-comfortable vibe that actually works well for Cherrapunji. It’s a solid 3-star place – not fancy, but clean and thoughtfully done. The rooms are spacious enough and the beds are surprisingly comfortable, which matters when you’ve been trekking around the wettest place on earth all day. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, despite being so close to the falls. Well, quiet except for the water sounds, but that’s actually pretty soothing. The staff knows the area really well too – they’ll tell you the best times to visit the nearby caves (go early, trust me) and which trails are manageable after the monsoon rains. The restaurant serves decent local Khasi food alongside the usual Indian fare, and honestly, their jadoh is better than what you’ll find at most places in Shillong.

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a place where you’ll lounge by a pool or get pampered with spa treatments. You’re here for the waterfalls, the living root bridges, and those misty mornings when the clouds literally roll through the valley below you. The resort gets that, and they’ve set up their common areas with these big windows that frame the landscape perfectly. During peak season (October to March), it fills up with families and adventure groups, so book ahead if you can. The 7.7 rating makes sense – it’s not perfect, but it delivers exactly what you need for exploring this absolutely wild corner of India. Plus, where else can you stay this close to one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the country without having to camp in the actual jungle?
