Poovar Island Resort

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of beach resorts, but Poovar Island Resort actually surprised me – and I don’t surprise easily. The place sits on this narrow strip of land where the Neyyar River meets the Arabian Sea, which sounds like marketing speak until you’re actually standing there watching fishing boats drift past while waves crash maybe fifty meters in the other direction. It’s honestly kind of surreal.

Getting there is half the adventure, I’ll warn you. The resort runs boats from the mainland because, well, you’re literally on an island. The ride takes about ten minutes from Pozhiyoor village, and yeah, it feels a bit remote – but that’s exactly the point. Once you’re there, the whole world shrinks down to just coconut palms, water, and this surprisingly sophisticated property that doesn’t try too hard to be fancy. The cottages are scattered along the shoreline, some right on the beach, others tucked back in the greenery. I stayed in one of the water-facing ones (totally worth the upgrade) and fell asleep to the sound of waves every single night.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep things relatively low-key despite being a five-star place. The staff knows your name by day two, the restaurant serves excellent Kerala fish curry – not some watered-down tourist version – and there’s this lovely quiet pool area where you can actually hear yourself think. The spa treatments use traditional Ayurvedic techniques, and honestly, after three days of their oil massages, I felt like a completely different person. The only minor gripe I have is that WiFi can be spotty in some cottages (though maybe that’s a feature, not a bug). Also, if you’re the type who needs constant entertainment, this might feel too peaceful – there’s no nightclub or loud poolside music, just the ocean and some very content guests reading books under umbrellas. Perfect for couples or anyone who wants to properly disconnect, but families with restless teenagers might want to think twice. The whole experience feels more like staying at a well-appointed friend’s private island than a typical resort, which explains that solid 8.2 rating – it delivers exactly what it promises without any flashy nonsense.
