Punnamada Resort

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Alleppey, and Punnamada Resort honestly caught me off guard – in the best way possible. When you first pull up (and yes, there’s actually decent parking, which matters more than you’d think in this area), you’re right on the edge of Punnamada Lake, and I mean *right* on it. The resort sits where the backwaters get serious, not like some of those places closer to town that are basically glorified ponds with a few palm trees.

What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to feel genuinely luxurious without that sterile five-star hotel vibe. The rooms – well, they’re more like pavilions really – face the water, and you wake up to the sound of traditional houseboats puttering by at dawn. I actually loved that gentle engine hum mixed with bird calls; it’s weirdly soothing once you get used to it. The staff here knows the backwater routes like the back of their hand, which is huge if you want to skip the tourist-packed canals and see where locals actually fish and live. They set up these private canoe trips that honestly beat any of the crowded houseboat tours you’ll book in town.

The food situation is… well, it’s interesting. They do this traditional Kerala feast thing that’s legitimately good – I mean, they’re not messing around with the fish curry – but breakfast can be hit or miss if you’re expecting western options. The infinity pool is gorgeous, sure, but you know what? Most evenings I found myself just sitting on the water-facing deck with a drink, watching the light change over the lake. There’s something about the way the coconut palms catch the breeze here that feels different from other parts of Alleppey. Maybe it’s because you’re further from the main tourist drag, or maybe it’s just that the water’s deeper and cleaner out here.

If I’m being completely honest, the 8.0 rating feels about right – it’s not perfect (the WiFi gets sketchy during monsoon season, and some of the room fixtures could use updating), but there’s something authentic about staying here that you won’t get at those massive chain resorts. Plus, you’re close enough to Alleppey proper when you want the chaos and markets, but far enough out that you can actually hear yourself think. The evening boat rides they arrange? Skip the sunset cruise everyone does and ask for the early morning one instead – trust me on this.
