First Impressions

Honestly, when I first pulled up to Rainforest Resort, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a three-star property tucked away in the Kerala backwoods. But you know what? The resort sits right at the edge of the Athirappilly forest, and I mean right at the edge — you can hear the famous waterfalls from your room if you’re lucky enough to get one facing the right direction. The parking situation is refreshingly stress-free, which matters more than you’d think when you’re navigating those winding Kerala roads.

The location here is honestly spectacular — recent guests rated it 9.9, and couples are giving it perfect 10s, which tells you something. Athirappilly Falls is basically a five-minute walk through the forest, and I actually prefer staying here rather than in Chalakudy town because you wake up to bird calls instead of traffic. The resort feels properly isolated without being inconvenient — you’re still only about 30 minutes from decent shops and restaurants if you need them, but far enough away that the air actually smells like rain and earth instead of exhaust.

The Rooms and Amenities

The accommodations are comfortable without trying to be something they’re not. My room had this lovely view of the forest canopy, and the sound of water is constant but soothing rather than overwhelming. What really impressed me was the spa and wellness center — it’s small but well-maintained, and the hot tub overlooks the jungle, which is pretty magical at sunset. There’s also a game room that’s perfect for rainy afternoons (and trust me, you’ll get a few of those during monsoon season). Breakfast is served buffet-style, and while it’s not elaborate, it covers all the basics plus some excellent local Kerala dishes that you won’t find at the chain hotels. I actually loved starting my mornings on the dining terrace with proper South Indian coffee and fresh fruit — the papaya here is incredible. The restaurant staff seemed to genuinely care about making sure you tried the regional specialties, which I appreciated. Evenings tend to be quiet here, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to disconnect from the usual chaos.

Look, this isn’t a place for people who need constant entertainment or five-star service. But if you’re looking for a genuine escape into nature without completely roughing it, Rainforest Resort hits that sweet spot perfectly. The combination of being so close to one of Kerala’s most stunning waterfalls while still having decent amenities and helpful staff makes it work. I left feeling like I’d actually experienced the Western Ghats rather than just taking photos of them — and honestly, that’s worth more than marble bathrooms and room service any day.
