Remota Patagonia Lodge Overview
You know what hits you first at Remota? The silence. I mean, you think you know quiet until you’re standing on this property along Ruta 9, watching the Patagonian steppe roll out endlessly in every direction. The lodge sits about 1.5 kilometers outside Puerto Natales proper – close enough that you’re not completely isolated, but far enough that the town’s fishing boat horns and late-night bar chatter fade into nothing.
The building itself is honestly pretty striking – this long, low structure that seems to float above the landscape on stilts. The architects clearly knew what they were doing because every common area window frames Torres del Paine in the distance like a postcard you’d never believe was real. Check-in is refreshingly straightforward (no upselling, thank god), and the staff actually seems to know the area instead of just reading from scripts. The rooms are what I’d call understated luxury – think warm wood, floor-to-ceiling windows, and heated bathroom floors that you’ll appreciate after a day hiking in Patagonian wind. Fair warning though: the Wi-Fi can be spotty, especially when weather rolls in from the mountains, but honestly… that might be a feature, not a bug.
What really sets this place apart is how they handle the whole “gateway to Patagonia” thing without feeling touristy. The restaurant sources lamb from local estancias, and their pisco sours are dangerously good – I may have had one too many while watching the sunset paint the mountains pink and orange. The concierge team knows Torres del Paine like the back of their hand and can arrange everything from boat trips to Balmaceda Glacier to horseback riding with actual gauchos (not the theme park version). Parking is never an issue since most guests are flying into Punta Arenas anyway, but if you’re driving the Ruta 40 route up from Argentina like we did, there’s plenty of space and they’ll even help arrange a car wash to get the Patagonian dust off. The only real downside? March through May can get pretty windy – like, hold-onto-your-hat-or-lose-it windy – but the trade-off is fewer crowds and some of the most dramatic skies you’ll ever see. That 8.4 rating feels about right; it’s not perfect, but it’s exactly what you want for exploring this part of the world.
