HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the Renaissance Okinawa Resort – honestly, I’d been burned by overhyped beach resorts before. But this place actually surprised me. It sits right on the Onna coastline where the water gets that ridiculous turquoise color you see in postcards, and the first thing that hits you is how they’ve managed to keep it feeling intimate despite being a proper resort. The lobby has this open-air thing going on where you can smell the ocean immediately, which sounds cheesy but actually works.

The location is pretty smart if you know Okinawa at all. You’re in Onna Village, which means you’re close enough to the good stuff – like that little stretch of beach bars near Maeda Point where locals actually hang out – but far enough from the Naha chaos that you can actually relax. I mean, the American Village crowds are a solid 30-minute drive south, so you get the best of both worlds. What I really appreciated was how walkable everything felt once you’re there. The resort sprawls a bit, sure, but there’s this network of paths that connect the different areas without making you feel like you need a map just to find dinner. Speaking of which, the restaurants here don’t just phone it in with generic “international cuisine” – they actually lean into local ingredients in ways that make sense. The breakfast setup alone had me coming back for seconds of their take on Okinawan specialties.

Here’s the thing though – and this is where the Renaissance really won me over – they seem to get that people want options without overwhelming them. Some nights you want to dress up for the teppanyaki place, other nights you just want to grab something casual by the pool. The staff genuinely knows the area too, which is rarer than you’d think. When I asked about good diving spots, the concierge didn’t just hand me a brochure – he actually talked me through the differences between the Blue Cave (touristy but worth it) and some of the quieter spots along the peninsula. The rooms themselves are comfortable without trying too hard to be trendy, and honestly, with those ocean views, you’re probably not spending much time inside anyway. Fair warning though – if you’re coming during Golden Week or summer holidays, book way ahead because this place fills up with families from mainland Japan who clearly know something good when they see it.

Nothing. The hotel was the worst experience I’ve had. What could be improved: The hotel is far from ‘luxury’ experience. The price we paid and what we got did not match! The outdoor swimming pool is in terrible condition
The food is sub-par and overpriced
The stuff barely speaks any English
The hotel is not suitable for couples/ people without kids - it is literally a kids park , very noisy
They hold animals in tiny cages - someone needs to check for animal cruelty
We had to pay a penalty of one extra night stay to get away from this place - and it was worth it! I would pay money not to be there
