You know what caught me off guard about Resort Kumano Club? It’s one of those places that actually feels remote without making you feel stranded. I mean, you’re tucked away in the Kumano mountains – this isn’t some cookie-cutter resort plunked down on a busy beach strip. When you’re driving up through Kushiyacho, the roads get narrower and the forest gets thicker, and honestly, there’s a moment where you wonder if your GPS is leading you astray. But then you arrive and it all makes sense.

The whole setup feels deliberately understated, which I appreciate. The main building has this clean, modern Japanese aesthetic that doesn’t try too hard to scream “traditional ryokan” at you – though you’ll definitely feel that influence in the attention to detail. What really won me over was how they handle the onsen experience here. The hot springs overlook the valley, and if you time it right (early morning is perfect), you’ll have these views of mist rolling through the mountains that honestly make you forget to check your phone for hours. The water has this slightly sulfurous smell that lets you know it’s the real deal, not some artificial setup. Staff mentioned the springs are particularly good in late fall when the leaves are changing – I can only imagine how stunning that must be.

Here’s the thing about staying here though – you need to embrace the pace. This isn’t a place where you’re going to find a 24-hour convenience store down the street or tons of dinner options within walking distance. The resort’s restaurant does solid kaiseki-style meals (the local river fish is excellent), but if you’re the type who likes to wander out for late-night snacks, you’ll want to stock up beforehand. The nearest proper town is about a twenty-minute drive, which isn’t terrible but worth planning around. Parking is abundant and free, which is refreshing after dealing with city hotels. Check-in was smooth – they speak enough English to handle international guests comfortably, though don’t expect everyone to be fluent. The rooms themselves are spacious by Japanese standards, and I loved that they managed to fit in proper soaking tubs even in the standard rooms. Air conditioning works well, which matters more than you’d think in the humid summer months. What sealed it for me was the genuine quiet at night – no traffic noise, no drunk tourists in the hallways, just the occasional sound of the forest settling in. It’s the kind of place where you actually sleep deeply and wake up feeling restored, not just rested.
