HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled into Salamander Resort – honestly, Middleburg can feel a bit too polished sometimes, like it’s trying too hard to be Virginia’s answer to the Hamptons. But this place actually gets it right. The resort sits on this gorgeous stretch of land that feels properly rural without being in the middle of nowhere, and when you’re driving up Pendleton Street, you can see why they picked this spot. The Blue Ridge Mountains sort of frame everything in the distance, and there’s this immediate sense that you’ve left the DC chaos behind (even though you’re really only about an hour out).

What struck me right away was how they’ve managed to feel upscale without being stuffy – I mean, this is horse country, so there’s always that risk of everything being a bit too foxhunt-and-riding-boots, you know? The spa is legitimately impressive, not just one of those hotel afterthoughts with a couple massage rooms. They’ve got this whole wellness thing figured out, with treatment rooms that actually make you want to stay longer than your appointment. The pool area is where I spent most of my time though – it’s got these cabanas that don’t feel like you’re sitting in a wind tunnel, which is honestly rare. And the food… well, the restaurant takes itself seriously in a good way. They’re doing proper farm-to-table stuff, but it’s not precious about it. You can taste that they’re actually sourcing from local farms, not just saying they are.

The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a place with a 9.3 rating – comfortable beds, good water pressure, all that basic stuff done well. But here’s what I really appreciated: the sound insulation is excellent. Even during a busy weekend (and trust me, this place fills up when there are events at the nearby vineyards), it stays quiet. Parking is straightforward, check-in was smooth, and the staff genuinely seems to know the area – they pointed me toward some back roads for morning runs that I never would have found otherwise. Look, it’s not cheap, and if you’re expecting some quirky boutique experience, this might feel a bit corporate for you. But honestly? Sometimes you just want a place that does luxury hospitality really well without any gimmicks, and Salamander delivers on that. Plus, if you’re planning to explore Middleburg’s wine scene or just want a proper escape from the city that doesn’t require a cross-country flight, this is pretty much exactly what you’re looking for.

The breakfast from Harriman's was absolutely exceptional. The service was very much complimentary to the meal. The spa services also very much detailed. I love the amenities the spa had to offer. I will definitely be back.

Everything! Gifted my daughter. and son-in-law with a sleepover and dinner at Harriman’s to kick-off het 38th birthday weekend celebration. The Salamander Resort and Spa was one of her “To-do’s” on her wish list. So I was happy to hear that her experience there did not disappoint.

You walk in and just enjoy the grandeur. The staff is relaxed and kind and it spills into the lodging. It’s expansive but close and it’s just a stunning place to behold.
