Salamander Resort and Spa Overview
First Impressions
Driving up to Salamander Resort and Spa through Virginia’s horse country, you immediately understand why this place has such a devoted following. The four-star property sits on 340 acres of rolling hills in Middleburg, and honestly, it feels like you’ve stumbled into some well-kept secret that locals have been protecting. The main building has this elegant yet approachable feel — think refined country estate rather than stuffy manor house. You know what strikes me most? How they’ve managed to create something that feels both polished and genuinely welcoming.
The Setting
Middleburg itself is one of those Virginia towns that seems almost too picturesque to be real, with its historic main street and working horse farms stretching in every direction. The resort takes full advantage of this setting — I mean, you’re literally surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside on the East Coast. What couples particularly love (and the 9.5 location rating from pairs makes perfect sense) is how private it feels despite being just an hour from Washington D.C. There’s something magical about watching the morning mist roll across the pastures while you’re having coffee on your private terrace.
Accommodations and Amenities
Each room feels thoughtfully designed rather than cookie-cutter corporate, with warm earth tones and furnishings that actually complement the pastoral setting. The bathrooms are particularly well done — spacious without being ostentatious, with soaking tubs that you’ll actually want to use. The spa is where this place really shines though. It’s not just about the treatments (which are excellent), but the whole philosophy of wellness that permeates everything here. The fitness center overlooks the grounds, and there’s something oddly motivating about working out while gazing at grazing horses in the distance.
Dining and Activities
The main restaurant sources heavily from local farms, which sounds trendy but actually makes sense given the agricultural richness of this region. I’ve had some genuinely memorable meals here — nothing overly fussy, just really good ingredients prepared well. What surprised me was how much there is to do without leaving the property. The tennis court gets plenty of use, and the fishing is better than you’d expect. But honestly, sometimes the best activity is just wandering the grounds with no particular destination in mind.
Why Guests Love It
There’s this sense of escape here that’s hard to quantify — maybe it’s the way the staff seems to genuinely care about your experience, or how the parking situation is completely stress-free (which matters more than you’d think). Couples keep coming back because it strikes that perfect balance between having plenty to do and feeling like a true retreat from everything. The 9.3 overall rating reflects what I’ve experienced firsthand: a place that delivers on its promises without overselling itself. It’s the kind of spot where you arrive feeling wound up from city life and leave wondering why you don’t do this more often.
Guest Reviews
The breakfast from Harriman's was absolutely exceptional. The service was very much complimentary to the meal. The spa services also very much detailed. I love the amenities the spa had to offer. I will definitely be back.
Everything! Gifted my daughter. and son-in-law with a sleepover and dinner at Harriman’s to kick-off het 38th birthday weekend celebration. The Salamander Resort and Spa was one of her “To-do’s” on her wish list. So I was happy to hear that her...

You walk in and just enjoy the grandeur. The staff is relaxed and kind and it spills into the lodging. It’s expansive but close and it’s just a stunning place to behold.
