Sea view guest house

17 Heath Avenue Northcote, 0627 Auckland, New Zealand

Guest reviews: 8.5

HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what surprised me most about Sea View Guest House? It’s actually tucked away on this quiet residential street in Northcote – Heath Avenue – but you’re literally minutes from everything that makes Auckland’s North Shore worth visiting. I mean, when you see “5-star” you sometimes expect some massive hotel complex, but this place feels more like staying at your most stylish friend’s house, if your friend happened to have impeccable taste and those harbor views that make you stop mid-conversation.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to experience Auckland like a local rather than a tourist. Northcote’s got this laid-back village vibe that most visitors never discover – there’s a great little farmers market on Saturday mornings just down the hill, and you can walk to some seriously good cafes that don’t have tourist prices. The guest house itself sits up high enough that you get those sweeping water views (hence the name, obviously), and on clear days you can see right across to the city skyline. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Auckland’s parking situation will appreciate. The owners clearly know what they’re doing – check-in was smooth, they actually gave useful local recommendations instead of just handing over a generic tourist brochure, and the rooms have that comfortable, lived-in luxury feel rather than sterile hotel perfection.

What really sold me though was the attention to detail that you don’t get at chain hotels. Fresh flowers in the room, proper coffee (not those awful pod things), and honestly the best shower pressure I’ve had in ages. The 8.5 rating makes total sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be flashy or over-the-top, just genuinely excellent at what it does. The only tiny critique I’d have is that being a guest house, the walls aren’t quite as thick as a purpose-built hotel, so you might hear your neighbors if they’re early risers, but it wasn’t really an issue. If you’re planning to explore both the North Shore beaches and the city (the ferry into town is like a 10-minute drive away), this spot gives you the best of both worlds without the premium prices of staying right in the CBD.

A beautiful house, the location was great, in a pleasant, quiet neighbourhood, and only a 5 minutes drive into the downtown across the bridge.

The pool and hot tub were magnificent, as was the view across to the city (especially beautiful at night). My son and I had a jolly good time flipping each other with the floaties provided. My husband was tired from driving around. The hot tub did an amazing job to relax him before the flight home. It was simply a fantastic end to our holiday in New Zealand.

Accommodation is clean, has a bathroom with a bath, and a separate shower. There is no kitchen, but the room was well equipped with a microwave, toaster, fridge, basic cutlery, and crockery and food for breakfast. Table and chairs in room and on balcony outside, so you can eat in. We slept well.

If you are looking for cheap and cheerful eatery and ATM there is a place called Pearn Crescent 5 mins drive away with oriental supermarkets, bakery and various restaurants, I love the Vietnamese one there where you can get a gigantic bowl of Pho for £8.

Auckland Airport was only 40 mins drive away (no traffic), this is also a good place to stay if you want to minimise travelling to the airport before a long flight home.

Melissa was a fantastic host. She is so warm and very welcoming and helpful in all respects. We left something behind, and she immediately posted it back to the UK for us.

Melissa, I would like to stay again! Thank you so much for having us.

House is stunning and the location was perfect for us. My husband was competing in tournament in Browns Bay, so my girls and I were out doing experiences and shopping and this place was so central for us.

After long trip up to Auckland from NP my youngest jumped in pool and I was dying to relax in the spa bath but unfortunately jets weren't working. Should of thrown on togs and gone out to the amazing spa outside looking over the bay but we had plans with sharks the following day and I only brought the one pair of togs. Did plan to swim Saturday but it rained bumma.

Had asked for car park which we got first night and on the second we got back after dinner and our car park had been taken so had to park on street - luckily a quiet street.

The king size bed is so funny massive rise in middle. First time away from home where I fell asleep straight away. So comfy - just couldn't cuddle to go to sleep but ended up being blessing as slept like a baby. Girls enjoyed their beds also.

My husband enjoyed the convenience of the breakfast before his first game and the balcony would of been ideal if weather had played it's part.

Would definitely stay here again.....

Swimming pool and spa were awesome. We got a free upgrade to their bigger suite which was awesome, thanks 😊

What could be improved: Shower was a bit cold, but the owner said he would get it sorted, everything else was great.
