Seclude Kerala, Marari Sands

You know what hit me first about Seclude Kerala? The name actually makes sense – this place really does feel tucked away from everything, even though you’re right on Marari Beach. I mean, Mararikulam isn’t exactly a household name like Kovalam or Varkala, but honestly, that’s part of its charm. The resort sits in this quiet stretch where the Arabian Sea meets these endless coconut groves, and there’s something almost dreamlike about waking up to fishing boats dotting the horizon at sunrise.

The property itself has that understated luxury thing down pat – think traditional Kerala architecture but with all the modern touches you’d expect from a 5-star place. The pool area becomes this social hub in the evenings (around 6 PM when the heat finally breaks), and I loved how you could actually hear the waves from most of the rooms. Fair warning though – if you’re used to those massive resort complexes, this might feel intimate to the point of cozy. Some people love that, others… well, you know your travel style better than I do. The staff genuinely seems to remember your name after day one, which is either charming or slightly overwhelming depending on your mood.

What really sets this place apart is its location in S.L. Puram – you’re close enough to slip into local life if you want to. There’s this little tea shop about a 10-minute walk down the road where fishermen gather in the mornings, and the resort can arrange these backwater canoe trips that start practically from their back door. The beach itself stays relatively quiet even during peak season (December through February), partly because it’s not as developed as some of the other Kerala coast spots. The 7.7 rating feels about right to me – it’s genuinely lovely and well-run, but it’s not going to blow your mind with over-the-top service or jaw-dropping facilities. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want though, especially if you’re coming to Kerala to actually relax rather than check experiences off a list. The food leans heavily into local seafood – which makes sense given you can literally watch the catch come in each morning – and they do this excellent traditional fish curry that’s worth the trip alone.
