Shima Kanko Hotel The Bay Suites

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels around Japan, but Shima Kanko Hotel The Bay Suites genuinely caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best way possible. You know how most luxury hotels feel sort of… manufactured? Well, this place actually feels like someone who understands hospitality designed it. It’s perched right on Ago Bay in this quiet corner of Mie Prefecture that honestly, most international travelers never even hear about. The drive from Kashikojima Station takes maybe ten minutes through these winding coastal roads, and suddenly you’re pulling into this circular driveway where the staff – I swear they must have a sixth sense – appear before you’ve even turned off the engine.

What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to nail that balance between sophisticated and genuinely comfortable. The suites (and they’re all suites, which is pretty great) have these floor-to-ceiling windows that look straight out over the bay, and honestly, I spent way too much time just watching the pearl diving boats drift by in the morning. The rooms themselves feel spacious without being cold – there’s this mix of contemporary Japanese design with touches that feel almost residential, like the deep soaking tubs positioned so you can still see the water while you’re relaxing. The beds are ridiculously comfortable, and the soundproofing is excellent, which matters because you’re right on the water and sometimes the wind picks up at night.

But here’s what I really appreciated – the staff seems to know this area inside and out. When I mentioned wanting to see the actual pearl farms (Ago Bay is famous for Mikimoto pearls, if you didn’t know), they didn’t just hand me a brochure. Instead, this concierge spent fifteen minutes drawing me a little map, explaining which viewing spots would be best at different times of day, and even called ahead to arrange a small boat tour with this local guy who’s been working the pearl beds for thirty years. That kind of local knowledge makes such a difference. The restaurant situation is solid too – their kaiseki dinners feature a lot of local seafood, obviously, and they source ingredients from farms right here in Shima. I had this incredible abalone dish that I’m still thinking about months later. The breakfast spread has both Japanese and Western options, and they make their coffee strong enough to actually wake you up, which isn’t always a given at Japanese hotels. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the spa books up pretty quickly during peak season, so definitely reserve treatments when you check in rather than waiting.
