Shimoda Tokyu Hotel Overview

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels in Japan, and the Shimoda Tokyu Hotel honestly surprised me in the best way. When you first pull up, it’s this classic resort-style building perched on a hill overlooking Shimoda Bay – and I mean, the views are ridiculous. You can see the harbor where those famous black ships arrived back in the 1850s, which is pretty cool if you’re into that sort of history stuff.

What really gets me about this place is how it manages to feel both traditionally Japanese and completely comfortable for international travelers. The lobby has this understated elegance thing going on, not too flashy but definitely upscale. Check-in was smooth – the staff spoke better English than I expected, which was a relief after some of my experiences in smaller Japanese towns. The rooms are larger than typical Japanese hotel rooms (thank god), and honestly, waking up to that ocean view never got old during my three-day stay. The tatami-style rooms are available if you want the full experience, but the Western-style rooms have these huge windows that make the space feel even bigger.

Here’s what I really appreciated – the hotel’s outdoor onsen. I mean, you’re literally soaking in hot spring water while looking out at the Pacific Ocean. It’s especially amazing in the evening when the fishing boats start heading out with their lights twinkling. The indoor baths are nice too, but come on, you’re in Shimoda for the scenery. Food-wise, the breakfast buffet had a solid mix of Japanese and Western options, though I’d recommend venturing into town for dinner at least once – there’s this little place called Gorosaya about a ten-minute walk down the hill that serves incredible kinmedai (golden eye snapper), which is basically Shimoda’s specialty fish.

The hotel’s location is actually perfect for exploring the Izu Peninsula. You’re close enough to walk to Shimoda’s main attractions – the Ryosenji Temple where the first US-Japan treaty was signed, the old town area with its traditional shops – but far enough up the hill that you feel removed from any tourist crowds. Parking was free and easy, which matters if you’re driving the scenic route down from Tokyo like I did. The only minor complaint? The WiFi was a bit spotty in some areas, but honestly, being slightly disconnected wasn’t the worst thing when you’re surrounded by that kind of natural beauty. Summer gets pretty busy with Japanese families on vacation, so if you’re looking for a quieter experience, spring or fall might be your best bet.

Beautiful views, clean, and good value. The shuttle made it very convenient to travel to and from the station. The breakfast had delicious Japanese and Western choices. We would love to come back.

Warm welcome in the car park, then through to reception. Great view of the bay from the room. Well-equipped bathroom and good facilities in the room. Comy beds, and a good-sized sofa in the room. Restaurant excellent - at dinner, there was a good selection of meals and some outstanding Izu wines; breakfast buffet was great, wide selection of dishes and drinks. Location close to Perry Road museum, and Ryosenji Temple, and some small kissaten.
Ideal location to explore Minami and Nishi Izu, hiking, watersports, and even as far as the famous waterfealls at Kawazu Nana Daru, Cape Irozaki, and the beaches on the suth coast. Bonus was visiting the museum home of Yasunori Kawabata, the author of Izu Dancing Girl - the famous Odoriko.

What could be improved: Only a single elevator. Entrance to restaurant a little confusing between the toilets. Breakfast buffet excellent, but some items such as coffee stand are really in awkward places.

The peace and tranquillity of the hotel. The scenic location near the sea. A haven from the busy city. A place to be one with nature and the quiet pace. Breakfast was wonderful. Large variety.

What could be improved: Perhaps the after evening activities in the hotel should include an area for relaxing and having after dinner drinks. Maybe hotel can provide coffee, tea and little snacks at the lounge for guests to mingle and relax after a day’s activity. However this is just a suggestion.
