You know what struck me first about Sinclairs Retreat Dooars? It’s actually perched on this hill in Chalsa where you can see the tea gardens rolling out below – I mean, the photos online don’t really capture how the morning mist just hangs over everything. The drive up is a bit winding (honestly, if you’re coming from Siliguri, give yourself extra time because the roads can be tricky), but once you’re there, you sort of understand why they picked this spot. It’s one of those places where you hear the birds before you hear any traffic, which is saying something in this part of West Bengal.

The hotel itself is… well, it’s solidly three-star, and I mean that in the best way. No pretense, no marble lobbies trying to be something they’re not. The rooms are clean and comfortable – actually, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the AC worked considering we were there during the humid season. The staff genuinely seems to know the area, which makes a huge difference when you’re trying to figure out whether to visit the Gorumara National Park or head to Buxa Tiger Reserve first. They’ll tell you straight up that early morning is best for wildlife spotting, and they’re right. The restaurant serves decent Bengali food alongside the usual suspects, though honestly, the local fish curry was better than I expected from a hotel kitchen.

What really works about this place is the location – you’re close enough to all the Dooars attractions without being stuck in the middle of tourist chaos. Chalsa itself is this small railway town that most people just pass through, but staying here means you can actually explore the tea estates properly (the Nedam Tea Garden is literally a short walk away). The hotel arranges forest permits and guides, which saves you the headache of dealing with the bureaucracy yourself. The 7.1 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it won’t disappoint either. If you’re looking for a base to explore the Dooars region without breaking the bank or dealing with crowds, this works. Just pack some mosquito repellent and maybe bring a light jacket – the evenings can get surprisingly cool up on the hill.
