Sitaram Mountain Retreat

Chithirapuram, India 9.3/10

Sitaram Mountain Retreat Overview

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of mountain resorts, but Sitaram Mountain Retreat in Pallivasal actually gets it right in ways that surprised me. You know how some five-star places feel stuffy? This one doesn’t – it’s got that rare combination of proper luxury without the pretension, which honestly is perfect for Munnar’s vibe.

The location is what really sold me though. Pallivasal isn’t the main Munnar town where all the tour buses cluster, it’s about 15 minutes down the winding road toward the dam area. I mean, you’re still close enough to hit the tea gardens and that famous Echo Point if you want, but you’re far enough out that mornings are just birdsong and mist rolling through the valleys. The air actually smells different here – cleaner, with this constant hint of eucalyptus from the plantations nearby. And parking? No stress at all, unlike some of those cramped places closer to town.

What I didn’t expect was how thoughtful the staff would be about the small stuff. They know exactly when to suggest heading out to avoid the afternoon crowds at the viewpoints, and someone always seems to appear with hot tea right when the evening chill kicks in around 6 PM. The rooms – well, they’re spacious enough that you’re not tripping over your luggage, and the windows frame those mountain views perfectly. I spent way too much time just watching the tea pickers move across the distant slopes like tiny dots. The beds are actually comfortable too, which isn’t always a given even at five-star spots in the hills. One thing though – if you’re someone who needs constant hot water, maybe mention it at check-in. Mountain plumbing can be temperamental, but they’ll sort you out quickly if you ask.

The whole place has this unhurried feel that matches Munnar’s pace perfectly. You’ll hear the occasional truck rumbling by on the main road, but it’s not disruptive – more like a gentle reminder that the world exists beyond these hills. During monsoon season (which I’d actually recommend if you don’t mind some rain), the mist gets so thick you can barely see the valley, and honestly? It’s magical. The restaurant does proper South Indian breakfast – none of that sad continental stuff – and their filter coffee is strong enough to wake the dead. That 9.3 rating makes sense once you’ve been there a few days and realized how rare it is to find a place that balances comfort with authenticity this well. It’s not trying to be a Delhi hotel dropped into the mountains; it actually belongs here.

Loved the food, the friendly staff, and the activities available. The morning yoga and evening meditations were beautiful.
The staff were also very helpful at booking an airport transfer.

If I can give 11/10 I will not flinch.

This is an Ayurvedic experience, therefore please do not come for any other purpose

We stayed in a beautiful treehouse which was surrounded by trees and nature, and the staff were all lovely, very attentive, excellent service. Vegetarian Indian food was delicious, especially breakfast.
We all had aruvedic facials and massages which were lovely, all natural products. We did yoga and tried the meditation. We also went on the 5 hour trek which the hotel arrange for extra cost with a great guide, which I recommend.

A beautiful property set on the hillside with cardamom plantations. Very friendly staff, excellent view and pleasant ambience make this a unique option for a getaway.
Though it might not be for everyone, A few things to keep in mind:
1. This is an ayurvedic retreat so No drinking or smoking is allowed on the premises.
2. The access to the retreat requires them to send a jeep to collect you from the main road as it's a very very steep narrow drive to the retreat for the last 700m.
3. Only vegetarian food options are available and that too in a very limited menu.
4. This is not a party place so that is something to be kept in mind.

If you're looking for a quite peaceful location to spend some time away from the daily headaches this is the place to go to.
