Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to SKK The Fern on that dusty stretch of Jodhpur Barmer Link Road – I mean, it’s not exactly in the thick of Jaisalmer’s tourist chaos, which actually turned out to be a blessing. The moment you walk through those doors, there’s this immediate sense of calm that hits you, probably because they’ve managed to create this oasis feeling without going overboard on the desert theme like so many places here do.

What really got me was how they’ve nailed the whole eco-friendly thing without making you feel like you’re roughing it. You know what I mean – sometimes “green” hotels make you sacrifice comfort, but this place actually feels more luxurious because of their approach, not despite it. The rooms have this wonderful natural light during the day, and the air feels cleaner somehow. I stayed there during peak tourist season in December, and while the old city was absolutely packed with tour groups, this spot remained surprisingly peaceful. The staff – and I’m not just saying this – genuinely seemed to care about both the environment and making sure you had everything you needed. There’s this one manager, can’t remember his name, but he knew exactly which local drivers were reliable and which restaurants in town were worth the trip (skip the rooftop places near the fort after 7 PM unless you enjoy crowds).

The location thing is interesting because initially you might think it’s inconvenient being a bit outside the main drag, but honestly? It’s perfect. You’re close enough to zip into the old city when you want that full Jaisalmer experience – the narrow lanes, the haveli tours, the sunset views from the fort walls – but far enough away that you can actually sleep at night without hearing rickshaws honking until 2 AM. Plus, if you’re planning any desert excursions, which let’s face it, you probably are, you’re actually better positioned here than staying right in the city center. The Sam Sand Dunes are easier to reach, and several desert camps pick up directly from the hotel. I noticed they had this system worked out where they could arrange camel safaris that avoided the most touristy spots – something about timing and knowing which dunes the big tour operators don’t usually hit. The breakfast spread was genuinely impressive too, with local Rajasthani dishes alongside the usual international options, and their coffee was strong enough to fuel those early morning desert trips. One small thing – the WiFi can be spotty in some rooms, but honestly, that might be a feature rather than a bug if you’re trying to disconnect a bit.
