Honestly, when I first pulled up to Soma Manaltheeram, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect – the drive south from Kovalam town takes you through some pretty local neighborhoods in Chowara, and then suddenly you’re at this gorgeous Ayurvedic resort that feels like it’s been tucked away from the world. The whole place has this authentic Kerala vibe that’s hard to find at the bigger beach resorts up north.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep everything feeling genuinely traditional without making you rough it. I mean, you’re still getting proper 5-star treatment, but the cottages are built in classic Kerala architecture with those beautiful wooden accents and palm-thatched roofs. The Ayurvedic treatments here are the real deal too – not just some spa add-on they threw together for tourists. You know what I loved? The doctors actually sit down and talk to you about your constitution and health goals before recommending anything. The morning yoga sessions happen right on the beach, and if you’re up early enough (which the roosters from the nearby village will definitely help with), you’ll catch the most incredible sunrise over the Arabian Sea.
The beach itself is pretty spectacular – much quieter than the main Kovalam beaches since you’re technically in Chowara. During monsoon season it gets a bit wild with the waves, but from October through March it’s absolutely perfect for swimming. The restaurant serves proper Kerala food alongside international options, and their fish curry is honestly better than what I had at some local places in town. One thing to note though – if you’re planning to explore beyond the resort, you’ll want to arrange transport since it’s about a 15-minute drive to the main Kovalam area. But that isolation is kind of the point, right? The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay memorable, and check-in was surprisingly smooth for a place that feels so laid-back. I’d definitely come back, especially during the cooler months when you can really take advantage of all the outdoor treatments and that amazing beachfront location.

The property caters to Ayurvedic treatments and the food is entirely vegetarian for buffet breakfast because of that but for dinner or lunch you can ask the kitchen to prepare fish, chicken etc. The location is excellent and easy access to the beach.
