Most places in this area are cramped (let’s be real, space is premium here), but these folks actually figured out how to give you outdoor space that doesn’t feel like an afterthought. The way they’ve designed the terraces, you get these glimpses of traditional rooftops mixed with the urban skyline – it’s this perfect blend of old and new Kyoto that you can’t really capture from street level. I spent way too much time out there in the evenings with a drink, just watching the city transition from day to night. The sounds of the Kawaramachi crowds sort of fade into this gentle urban hum that’s actually pretty soothing.
What surprised me most was how they handle the whole ryokan-meets-modern-hotel thing without making it feel forced or touristy. The rooms have these thoughtful Japanese touches – proper tatami areas, soaking tubs that are actually deep enough for tall people (thank you), and these gorgeous sliding screens – but they didn’t skimp on the stuff international travelers need, like proper lighting for reading and outlets where you expect them to be. Check-in was smooth even during what felt like peak tourist season, though I’d definitely book well ahead if you’re planning a spring or fall visit. The location means you can walk to Gion in about ten minutes, hit up Pontocho Alley for dinner, or catch the train to basically anywhere from nearby Gion-Shijo station – but you already know you’ll want to come back to that terrace instead of staying out too late. It’s that kind of place where the hotel itself becomes part of why you loved Kyoto, not just where you happened to sleep.
