Sowaka

605-0821 Kyoto, Kyoto, Higashiyama-ku, Kiyoi-cho 480, Japan
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of fancy places in Kyoto, but Sowaka actually gets it right in a way that most hotels completely miss. It’s tucked into this impossibly narrow street in Higashiyama – and I mean narrow, like you’ll wonder if your taxi can even fit down Kiyoi-cho. But that’s exactly what makes it special, you know? You’re literally a two-minute walk from Kiyomizu-dera, which means you can slip out early morning before the tour buses arrive and have the temple basically to yourself.
The building itself is this perfect blend of ryokan tradition and modern luxury that doesn’t feel forced or trying-too-hard. When you step inside, there’s this immediate sense of calm – partly because of the beautiful interior design, but honestly, mostly because you’ve just escaped the crowds of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka right outside. The staff here actually knows the neighborhood intimately, which sounds obvious but trust me, it’s not always the case. They’ll tell you about the little pottery shop that opens at 9 AM sharp, or how to time your evening walk to catch the lanterns being lit along the stone paths. The rooms – well, they’re what you’d expect from a place with a 9.5 rating, but what struck me was the attention to details that actually matter. The windows are properly soundproofed (crucial when you’re this close to tourist foot traffic), and they’ve somehow managed to fit modern bathrooms into what’s clearly a historic structure without making it feel awkward.
What really sold me on this place, though, was how it handles the whole “authentic Kyoto experience” thing without being cheesy about it. You’re staying in the heart of the historic district, but you’re not roughing it in some bare-bones traditional accommodation. The location means you can walk to Gion in fifteen minutes, hit the bamboo groves in Arashiyama with a short train ride, and – this is key – you can actually navigate the popular spots at off-peak times because you’re staying right there. I mean, most people are commuting in from hotels near Kyoto Station, but you’ll be finishing your coffee while they’re still figuring out the bus system. The only real downside is that same location advantage – during cherry blossom season or autumn, the street outside can get pretty packed during peak hours, but honestly, that’s true anywhere worth staying in this part of the city. Just plan your comings and goings accordingly, and you’ll be fine.

It was an amazing stay, each staff member went beyond expectations, we had a hiccup with the laundry (our mistake, we were missing a sock and included clothing we needed sooner than expected) but they went above and beyond to get us our laundry sooner and was so understanding over everything. Nothing negative to say at all!

Every detail was thought through and executed to perfection at this beautiful Ryokan in Kyoto. The staff was incredibly helpful and kind, helping us book everything from dinners to trains. The food was great but I would only plan one dinner there. The best meal we ate was at Motoi which was nearby. Our room was simply fantastic and the small gifts...

I liked Everything!! The old building filled with warmth and history. The beautiful garden view from my room. The exquisite craftsman woodwork, the inviting tatami mats and the graceful shoji screens. The bottle of wine welcoming me with a personal note, a heart shaped napkin and tasty little sweets. The dinner was the best I have ever had in...

Everything. Our room was exceptional, the location is perfect, the breakfasts were absolutely great, the team are amazing. It's also well worth splurging on the kaiseki dinner in the restaurant with sake pairing, it was wonderful.
