Vandiperiyar isn’t one of those touristy spots that everyone talks about, but that’s exactly why it works. You’re close enough to Thekkady’s main attractions (honestly, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is maybe 20 minutes away), but you’re staying where actual Kerala life happens. The staff here seems to get that balance too – they’re genuinely helpful without that over-the-top hotel fakeness you sometimes encounter. When I asked about the best local places to eat, the guy at reception actually drew me a little map and warned me that the toddy shop down the road gets pretty lively after 8 PM.

What really surprised me was how quiet the place stays, even though you’re right in town. The rooms are clean and comfortable – nothing fancy, but the AC works well (crucial in this humidity), and there’s actually decent water pressure in the showers. I stayed during monsoon season and never had any issues with leaks or dampness, which… well, if you’ve traveled in Kerala during the rains, you know that’s not always guaranteed. The 8.3 rating makes sense once you realize they’re doing the basics really well rather than trying to be something they’re not. Parking is easy, check-in was smooth, and honestly, the best part might be sitting on their little terrace area in the evening with some tea – you can watch the whole neighborhood wind down for the day.
