Sterling Gir

So I stumbled across Sterling Gir during my Gujarat wildlife trip, and honestly, it turned out way better than I expected for a 3-star place. The location is actually pretty clever – they’ve positioned it right across from Dipda Dhar near the Hiran River, which means you get these lovely river sounds at night instead of the usual hotel noise. I mean, you’re literally a stone’s throw from Sasan Gir National Park, but somehow it doesn’t feel touristy or overcrowded like some of those safari lodges closer to the main gates.

What really struck me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area – not just the rehearsed tourist information, but actual useful stuff. The front desk guy told me the best times to spot peacocks near the river (early morning around 6 AM, if you’re curious), and the restaurant manager casually mentioned which local guides actually know their lions versus the ones who just drive you around aimlessly. The rooms are comfortable enough, though I’d describe them as practical rather than luxurious – clean linens, decent AC that actually works during Gujarat’s brutal afternoons, and surprisingly good water pressure. The river-facing rooms are worth the small upgrade fee because you actually get a nice breeze, plus there’s something quite peaceful about watching the water flow while you’re planning your next safari.

You know what I appreciated most? The whole place has this relaxed, unpretentious vibe that works perfectly after a dusty day tracking lions in Gir Forest. The restaurant serves solid Gujarati thali alongside the usual continental options, and they’re surprisingly accommodating about dietary restrictions – important if you’re traveling with picky eaters or health-conscious folks. The 7.5 rating feels about right; it’s not going to blow your mind, but everything works as it should. Check-in was smooth, the WiFi actually functions (though it gets spotty during evening hours when everyone’s uploading their safari photos), and there’s adequate parking space, which matters more than you’d think when you’re coordinating early morning wildlife drives. I’d definitely stay here again, especially since the proximity to both the forest and the river gives you options for those inevitable downtime hours between safaris.
