You know what struck me first about Sterling Wayanad? The drive up Valluvadi Road itself – it’s this winding stretch that makes you forget you’re heading to a five-star place because honestly, the whole area feels refreshingly uncommercialized. I mean, Sultan Bathery isn’t exactly Goa or Kerala’s usual tourist circus, which is exactly why this place works so well. The hotel sits tucked away from the main road noise, and when you pull up (parking’s actually decent, by the way), there’s this immediate sense that you’ve found something the tour groups haven’t completely discovered yet.

The property itself has that polished-but-not-trying-too-hard vibe that’s honestly pretty rare in this price range. Sure, it’s got the five-star designation, but it doesn’t feel stuffy about it – more like someone took a really nice resort and dropped it into the middle of spice country. The staff seems to actually know the area, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how often that’s not the case. They’ll tell you about the elephant corridor nearby (it’s real, and active) and which local spice farms are worth the detour versus the tourist traps. The rooms are solid – nothing revolutionary, but the air conditioning works reliably and the bathrooms have proper water pressure, which matters more than fancy marble when you’re dealing with Wayanad’s humidity.

What really gets me about this place is how it handles the location. Instead of trying to recreate some generic luxury bubble, they lean into being in the Western Ghats. The restaurant actually uses local ingredients well – I had this cardamom-infused fish curry that was miles better than the usual hotel fare. Mornings here are genuinely special; you’ll hear this incredible mix of bird calls that changes throughout the day, and if you’re up early enough, there’s often mist rolling through the hills that makes the whole place feel almost mystical. The 7.9 rating makes sense to me – it’s not perfect (the Wi-Fi can be spotty, and some of the common areas show a bit of wear), but it delivers on what matters. Plus, you’re about twenty minutes from Edakkal Caves and close enough to Banasura Sagar Dam for a proper day trip without feeling like you’re staying in the middle of nowhere. It’s one of those places where you end up extending your stay because leaving feels premature – not because there’s so much to do at the hotel itself, but because it’s such a good base for actually experiencing this part of Kerala properly.
