The location is honestly perfect if you want to be right in the thick of things in Darjeeling. I mean, you’re literally steps away from the main promenade where everyone goes for their evening walks, and the buzz from Chauk Bazaar drifts up just enough to remind you that you’re in a real, living hill station, not some isolated resort bubble. The building itself has that colonial-era charm that Darjeeling does so well – you know, the kind of place that makes you feel like you should be sipping tea while discussing the weather (which, let’s be honest, you probably will be).

Now here’s the thing about this place – it’s got five-star aspirations, and in many ways it delivers, but it’s also got that slightly rough-around-the-edges quality that keeps it from feeling too polished or sterile. The spa is actually really good, which surprised me because sometimes these hotel spas are just afterthoughts, but they know what they’re doing with traditional treatments. The rooms are spacious and most have decent mountain views, though the ones facing The Mall can get a bit noisy during peak tourist season – I’m talking about those October-November months when everyone’s trying to catch the post-monsoon clarity. The staff genuinely seems to care, which isn’t always a given at this price point. What I really appreciated was how they handled the whole power situation (because let’s face it, this is Darjeeling and the electricity can be… temperamental). They’ve got backup systems that actually work, and hot water that stays hot, which is more important than you might think when you’re at this altitude and the fog rolls in.

The restaurant serves solid food – not mind-blowing, but definitely above average, and they do a proper English breakfast that hits the spot on those chilly mornings. You’ll probably end up eating out at least half the time anyway because you’re so close to everything, but it’s nice knowing you’ve got a reliable option right there. Honestly, what makes this place work is the location combined with just enough luxury to feel special without being pretentious about it. The 7.5 rating makes sense to me – it’s not perfect, there are definitely areas where they could step up their game, but for what you pay and where you are, it delivers on the promise of a comfortable base for exploring Darjeeling. Just book early if you’re coming during Diwali or Christmas – this place fills up fast, and The Mall gets absolutely packed during those times.
