Taj Kumarakom Resort and Spa Kerala

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of Kerala resorts, but the Taj Kumarakom actually gets it right in ways that surprised me. When you first pull up to the property – and yeah, finding it can be a bit tricky since the signage isn’t great once you turn off the main Kottayam road – you’re immediately hit with how quiet everything gets. I mean, you’re literally on Vembanad Lake, so there’s this constant gentle lapping of water that just sort of washes away whatever stress you brought with you.

The whole place is built around these traditional Kerala houseboats and backwater architecture, but honestly, they’ve done it without making it feel like a theme park (which is more than I can say for some other luxury spots around here). The rooms – well, they’re properly spacious, and if you can swing it, get one of the lake-facing villas because the morning mist rolling off the water is something else. What really got me was how they handle the monsoon season; most places feel damp and miserable, but their covered walkways and the way they’ve positioned everything actually makes the rain feel cozy rather than inconvenient. The spa is tucked away in this little corner where you can hear both the water and the birds – it’s one of those places where you actually want to book treatments instead of just feeling like you should.

You know what though? The real magic happens in the evening when they light up the traditional lamps along the pathways. It sounds cheesy, but it’s not – there’s something about eating dinner on their open-air restaurant deck while watching the local fishermen with their Chinese fishing nets that makes you forget you’re at a resort at all. The food is proper Kerala cuisine too, not the watered-down stuff they serve tourists. Their fish curry actually has some heat to it, and they source a lot of ingredients from local suppliers (I asked). The 8.6 rating makes sense when you factor in that the service feels personal without being intrusive – they remember your name, they know how you like your tea, but they’re not hovering. Check-in was smooth, parking is ample, and honestly, the only real downside is that during peak season (December to February), it can get pretty busy with families, so if you’re looking for complete tranquility, maybe avoid those months. But even then, the property is large enough that you can always find a quiet spot by the water to just… breathe.
