Takasago Onsen Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Takasago Onsen in Asahikawa, I wasn’t expecting much from the exterior. It’s tucked away in this residential area on Takasagodai, and you know what? That’s actually perfect. You’re far enough from the tourist chaos but still close enough to everything that matters. The whole Takasagodai district has this quiet, lived-in feel that most visitors to Hokkaido completely miss.
But here’s the thing about this place – it’s one of those hotels where the magic happens once you step inside. The onsen facilities are genuinely impressive (and I mean that as someone who’s soaked in hot springs across Japan). The water has this silky quality that you don’t get at the commercial chain places, and honestly, after a day of wandering around Asahikawa’s winter streets or hiking in the nearby hills, those mineral-rich baths hit different. The indoor baths are spacious enough that even during busier evening hours, you’re not bumping elbows with other guests. I actually preferred the quieter morning sessions – around 7 AM, you’ll often have the place mostly to yourself.
The rooms are solid 4-star territory without trying too hard to be fancy. Clean tatami, comfortable futons, and those little details that show someone actually cares – like proper blackout curtains (crucial if you’re dealing with Hokkaido’s summer white nights) and heating that actually works in winter. The staff genuinely knows the area too, which is rarer than you’d think. When I asked about local ramen spots, they didn’t just point me toward the obvious tourist places but mentioned this little shop about ten minutes away that locals actually frequent. Parking is straightforward and free, which matters more than most people realize when you’re exploring rural Hokkaido by car. The 8.3 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. If you’re using Asahikawa as a base for exploring the region (smart move, by the way), this place gives you that authentic ryokan experience without the premium prices you’d pay closer to Sapporo or the tourist zones.
Guest Reviews
This hotel is so retro and fun. Very family friendly. The dinner and breakfast was great and free parking. The staff were super nice. We stayed in the room with the hot tub on the roof and it was the coolest room ever! Definitely our favorite stay...

What could be improved: It’s a little bit far away from rest of the city
The sauna and bath are great. The futon is great. The breakfast starts at 7am but I check-out early at 630am because the bus from Takasagodai-8-chome departs at 7.11am. They allow early breakfast anyway. The breakfast was delicious. The staff did not...
Great amenities, there were a lot of areas to explore in the Ryokan and it was kept very clean. They have a DDR machine (note the opening hours though) and a manga shelf (which is cool even if we couldn't read Japanese). The futon and chairs are...
