TAOYA Shima Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of onsen hotels, but TAOYA Shima honestly surprised me in the best way. First thing you notice pulling up is how they’ve positioned this place – it’s tucked into Shirahama in Toba, which means you’re getting legitimate coastal views without the circus of tour buses that plague some of the bigger resort areas. The drive in takes you through these winding roads where you’ll catch glimpses of Ago Bay through the trees, and honestly, that’s when it starts to feel like you’re actually escaping somewhere.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve nailed that sweet spot between traditional ryokan vibes and modern comfort – I mean, you’ve got your proper tatami rooms, but the bathrooms are spacious and the beds (if you go for the Western-style rooms) are actually decent quality, not those rock-hard things you sometimes get stuck with. The onsen itself is the real star though. They’ve got both indoor and outdoor baths, and the outdoor one at sunset? You’re looking out over the water while soaking in mineral-rich water that actually feels different on your skin – not just hot tap water like some places try to pass off. I went in October, so the evening air was crisp enough to make the hot water feel perfect, plus the autumn colors reflecting in the bay were pretty spectacular.
The food situation is solid too – they do the traditional kaiseki dinner service, but it’s not overly fussy or precious about itself. You know what I appreciated? They actually ask about dietary restrictions and seem to understand what vegetarian means, which isn’t always a given at these traditional spots. Breakfast has both Japanese and Western options, though honestly, go with the Japanese spread because their grilled fish game is strong. One small thing – parking is free and easy, which might not sound like much, but if you’ve ever tried to park near popular onsen areas during peak season, you’ll appreciate not circling around for twenty minutes. The staff’s English is decent enough for basic communication, and they’re genuinely helpful with local recommendations. I ended up taking their suggestion for a walking route around Uramura-cho that most tourists completely miss, and it led to some great photo spots along the coastline. At 8.2 rating, it’s not perfect – the walls are a bit thin so you might hear your neighbors, and the WiFi gets spotty in some rooms – but for the price point and location, it delivers on what matters most: good onsen, solid food, and that feeling of being somewhere special without breaking the bank.
Premium healing resorts offer comprehensive wellness programs featuring spa therapies, meditation retreats, and holistic treatments designed to promote deep relaxation and personal renewal.

Food, all-inclusive drinks, view-everything is wonderful!! We enjoyed the beach in front of the hotel, which was a bonus!!
What could be improved: The building itself is old but well-maintained. Still, many items tell us it's an old place.
