You know what caught me off guard about The BASE GLAMPING YUGAWARA? I mean, I’d heard about this whole glamping trend, but honestly wasn’t sure what to expect when I rolled up to this place tucked away in the Yugawara onsen district. The thing is, they’ve actually nailed that sweet spot between roughing it and, well, not roughing it at all.

The setup here is pretty clever – you’re basically camping but with all the bits that usually make camping miserable taken care of for you. The tents (though calling them tents feels weird since they’re more like fabric cabins) sit on these raised platforms, and you can hear the Chitose River babbling away in the background, especially at night when everything else quiets down. What I really appreciated was how they positioned everything – you get that outdoorsy vibe without feeling like you’re sleeping in someone’s backyard. The whole property feels deliberately tucked away from the main onsen tourist shuffle, which is saying something since Yugawara can get pretty packed, especially during cherry blossom season and autumn.

Here’s the thing about staying here versus the traditional ryokans down the hill – you’re still getting that Japanese hospitality experience, but it’s more relaxed somehow. The staff actually seem to enjoy what they’re doing instead of going through the motions, and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. No formal ceremony, just friendly folks who clearly know the area well. They pointed me toward some hiking trails I never would’ve found otherwise, including this little path that connects to the Makuyama Park area – definitely worth the 20-minute walk if you’re into that sort of thing. The parking situation is handled well too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling stuff for a glamping trip.

What really sets this place apart though is how they’ve thought about the details. The beds are actually comfortable (not a given with outdoor accommodations), there’s proper lighting for reading, and – this might sound silly – but the bathrooms are clean and don’t feel like an afterthought. You’re also close enough to the main Yugawara onsen area that you can easily walk down for a proper hot spring soak, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with tour bus noise at 7 AM. I stayed here in late fall and the whole setup felt pretty magical with the leaves changing, though I imagine summer might get a bit warm in the tents despite the river nearby. The morning coffee situation is solid too – they’ve got this little setup where you can make your own, and drinking it outside while listening to the water and watching the mist come off the mountains… well, it beats a hotel lobby, that’s for sure.
